In the middle of the book, when Martin is turning into a Nazi, despite being used to being good friends with him, Max does not know if he can trust Martin anymore. Martin himself is saying ruthless things about Max and Jewish people in general. Max tries to make amends, but Martin's mind is not changing. This can be related to Escape From East Berlin in several places. One place is with Kurt's older brother, Franz. We are told that Franz was not the Stasi Fanboy and border guard he is in the present book. However, when he joined the Stasi, suddenly he became a total fanatic. Martia doesn't seem to really know or like anyone outside of her family and cousins, and everyone else seems to hate her because her family was originally from the West side of Berlin

In both books, there was something that was affecting them.

The article explains that when the wall was built, the people who were in East Berlin, living there or not, were stuck there because of the building of the wall. Families were split apart and people could no longer see friends. In some places, apartment buildings were part of the wall but people could just enter in the East and exit out to the West, but then those were paved off, so people began jumping out of windows, and being caught by people holding blankets, eventually those were also blocked off. Any people that tried to cross the wall or tried to escape to West Berlin were allowed to be shot, and many people died from these unfortunate happenings. On one side of the wall, West Berlin was thriving with a good economy and a welcoming atmosphere as the fear of being shot was not a concern. In the East, however, there were many problems because all that were educated had gone to the West. The economy was in shambles and there was also the fear that drove people to leave, the worry that their neighbor may have grown tired of them and get them to be jailed, and they never knew who was a part of the Stasi (secret police agency of the German Democratic Republic, officially: Ministerium für Staatsicherheit).

In the Iliad, an ancient Greek myth of the battle for a city with powerful gods, Legendary heroes, and massive battles, the Iliad is a powerful story of what happens when relationships falter and arguments arise. Starting with an argument between Greek generals, it ends with no one happy and many dead. One character (something in Greek I could never say, much less spell), is great friends with the main character, Achilles. During the war, he dies, driving Achilles into sorrow. Achilles then kills the guy who kills his friend, fights a river, (literally) and slaughters half an army, he then lays his friend to rest. This shows what lengths people will go to to get revenge when friends and family are killed, although maybe not as extreme.

This poem connects to the essential question, how do relationships affect people, because she talks about her relationship with her father. She says that her father is a "superhero and a super storm". She says that she loves her father but doesn't like some of his traits and that there are some traits from him she doesn't want. Relationships affect people because even though you can love the person they can still cause hurt in your life. Your good and bad traits come from your parents whether you love them or not. Relationships can affect the decisions you make and the way you feel.
