An example could be a culminating project after a unit of study. Teachers provide some guidelines, probably a rubric or checklist and students take it from there producing their own original work to show what they learned from the unit.

This is an assessment AS learning as the students can take more from their project rather than just ending with the in class/teacher directed instruction.

An example we use in my school is EasyCBM. This gives percentile ranks that are nationally normed for the grade level. This is an assessment of learning as it occurs at designated times per year.

I believe an example would be the SBAC as it is given to all students in the state. As a kindergarten teacher in NV I am not super familiar with the SBAC but I know that the state test from the state I previously taught in was tied to teacher evaluations thus making it high stakes.

This is an assessment OF learning as it takes place at the conclusion of the grade levels.

An example would be my kindergarten skills checklist (ex. I show letters they state sound). I complete this with students a minimum of once per month to help guide my instruction.

Both kindergarten teachers in my building use the same checklist and it is placed in the data binder that follows the student into first grade and beyond. For those who may have struggled with some kinder skills but not enough for retention in kinder the first grade teacher may continue to use the checklist.

In a Montessori environment like I work in a key factor of the teacher is to be an observer. I observe the students during their work time to assess their learning and to guide my next steps in their individual and or small group instruction.

My observation notes would be an example of instructional/classroom assessments AS Learning because I can look to see what is motivating each student to keep working, I observe the student as an individual not as a group or a class.

Informal

An example from my classroom would be our circle time questions. One that I recently did I asked each student to clap the syllables in their name before lining up for recess. I took down some mental notes to plan some more instruction and practice of this skill based on that quick activity.

This example is an assessment FOR learning because the student receive immediate feedback from the teacher.

Formative

An example would be any kind of written or verbal response in which the teacher responds. Whether using a rubric or comments on paper. For older students a message board or chat like response.

This is an assessment AS learning especially if the student can respond again to the feedback. And even if he can't he will know for next time how to do better.

Our school has two benchmark assessments that we use. One is Easy CBM and the other is MAP. Both are given three times per year and teachers use the data to group and regroup students to work on skills that need work.

When you are checking in on all student utilizing the same test, you are doing an assessment OF learning.
