1) State the type(s) of Hobbies
My hobbies are typically sports or fitness related.
2) What do these involve?
These involve dragon boat and working out at the gym.
3) Who do you pursue these hobbies with, how often do you do it, and where?
I have a team whom I paddle with competitively for the past three years. I train with my teammates at least once a week during the weekends. During the weekdays, I will hit the gym for cardio and strength training to maintain my fitness so as to perform at my peak during races.
4) Recall one interesting personal story connected to this hobby.
Recently, I participated in a competition which I was not fully prepared for. It was my first time competing in a two-kilometre dragon boat race without proper training as I was too busy with work to commit to my training sessions the past month. I was in for a rude shock when I realised how strenuous the race was. Towards the last lap, I was gritting my teeth and praying that I would not pass out. It felt like every fibre of my being was on fire and I could not wait for it to be over. When we were about to reach the finishing line, I saw my life flash before my eyes and I was elated when it was all over. Alas, we lost to the winning team by a mere eight seconds but I was glad that I competed in the race in the first place. We had our debrief, analysed our weaknesses and encouraged one another to train harder and emerge victorious the next time. What I truly love about dragon boat is the sense of camaraderie when we train and endure hardship together. Thus, this is a hobby which I hope to pursue in the long run.

Most of my hobbies are indoor hobbies that won’t require me to be physicaly exposed to the elements of nature.

Some examples are watching shows and baking.

Usually, I will pursue these hobbies with my sister, who coincidentally share similar interests with me as well! Since we are close-knit, <del>closely bonded,</del> we spend almost everyday in each other’s room. On weekends, which is our binge watch night, I will squeeze into <del>on</del> the bed with her as we stay up together and watch variety shows until early in the morning. Having Sharing a similar sense of humor as well, we often laugh together, making the night even more enjoyable. Sometimes, we will also bake together for special occasions like birthdays or when we have time to spare on certain days. However, due to our <del>having come home later and</del> busy schedules lately, we rarely make<del> </del><del>clear up</del> time for baking anymore.

It was the time when we baked a birthday cake together for our mom. We had searched <del>up</del> for a cake recipe and followed the instructions accordingly. Obviously, nothing comes smoothly. I was supposed to separate the egg yolk and egg white but while cracking the egg, I accidentally broke the egg yolk, causing it to mix with the batter we had put so much effort in! In the end, we <del>re</del>started from scratch. However, everything <del>ran</del> went much more smoothly on the second try. By the time the cake was baked completely , it was already late evening. We rushed for time as we added whipped cream and decorated the cake ‘beautifully’. When our mother got home, we proudly showed her our creation as she looked shocked and tried to stifle her laughter. Evidently, the cake didn’t turn out as beautifully as expected. Nevertheless, it was the most memorable experience as I learned that baking is not as easy as it seems, which drives my passion for baking even further. Not to forget, the euphoric and blissful moment me and my sister shared that day was unforgettable, and I hope that that day will come again. Thus, this is a hobby i will definitely pursue for the years to come.

Hobbies can encourage us to stretch the limits of our imagination, see the world in a new way or provide us with the mental space to come up with great ideas.

P: Yes, teenagers do get enough opportunities to pursue their own interests and hobbies.
E: Schools provide a wide range of curriculum subjects that allows students to choose to do the activities that they enjoy. For example food consumer education (FCE) , design and technology (DNT) , art class, co-curriculum activities (CCA) and many more. :D
E: As we spend most of our time in school, we are given ample time to work on and improve on the skills of our hobbies.
E: People who enjoy cooking may choose to enter into the cooking stream, and people who appreciate language arts would choose to take literature as on of their subjects.
L: All in all, teenagers are given adequate opportunities to pursue and work on the hobbies they are interested in.

P: Yes, teenagers do get enough opportunities to pursue their own interests and hobbies.
E: Schools often arrange activities or competitions for students to participate in to further explore their hobbies.
E: For example, last year my school held a post-exam activity regarding python and scratch. Students who were interested in coding were able to participate in this programme were very excited and learnt a lot from the course.
E: Not only that, the school arranged learning journeys for students after exams. My class was delighted to visit the <del>brought out to </del>Singapore Botanic Gardens. This greatly appealed to those of us who were passionate about botany, landscaping, environmental preservation , photography etc...The learning journey was very informative and many of my classmates fell in love with the scenery there and even took some of the seeds that were given by the guide there and planted the beautiful plants at home.
L: Teenagers are given many opportunities to explore their hobbies.

However, some people may argue that with all the homework load and exams piled up on them, they do have the time to spend on their hobbies. Parents are stressing the importance of studies more, than for a child to spend time to look for and pursue a hobby. A study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development found that the average 15-year-old student in Singapore devoted 9.4 hours to homework weekly, far surpassing the global average of five hours a week. Thus, teenagers may not have time and space to pursue their hobbies and interests.

In conclusion, many teenagers are given numerous opportunities to explore their hobbies. Many schools provide opportunities to nurture the hobbies <del>within</del> that pique their interests and stir their hearts. Besides, teenagers in Singapore enjoy long school holidays and public holidays, giving them ample leisure time to explore and develop their passions.

• Offers some thoughtful responses with generally well-developed perspective(s)
• Uses a range of largely appropriate vocabulary and structures;

Yes, teenagers do get enough opportunities to pursue their own interests and hobbies.

One reason I feel that teenagers do get enough opportunities to pursue their own interests and hobbies is due to the fact that internet now is at their fingertips, allowing them to pursue a plethora of interests or find their own interest groups online quickly. <del>very capable.</del> For example, youtube has many tutorials on how to master certain skills, introduction videos, academic advice. Online platforms now have a lot more information to offer to youth to upgrade their skills. Aside from youtube, there's also google, with so much information, advice and wisdom on the internet. Any youth can learn or upgrade new skills, hobbies and interests in a quick, efficiency manner at their convenience.

Another reason I feel that way is because youth have many people they can look up to for advice. For example, youth have teachers, coaches from after school co-curricular activities and adults to look up to for advice. These youths can look towards these advisers for advice and guidance, this helps them pursue their interests and hobbies. Thus I feel youth have the opportunities needed to advance their interests.

However, some may argue that teenagers do not get enough opportunities to pursue their own interests and hobbies as they are limited by time. As youth are still young, they have to attend school, a whole host of extra-curricular programmes, tuition, supplementary classes and enrichment classes. On average, school takes up 7 hours of the day and an additional 8 is used for sleep, leaving 9 hours. However, we must not forget about the time used to travel, other commitments such as leadership roles, eating, homework and others. This leaves maybe only 7 hours of free time a day, of which is not a lot to work with. The 7 hours may be used to study in preparation for the exams. With this amount of time, interests require at minimum 1 or 2 hours to make decent progress. Hence it is hard to advance interests as a youth.

Despite this I feel that teenagers do get enough opportunities to pursue their own interests and hobbies. With good time management and passion, the 7 hours can be used effectively to advance their interests, hence i feel youth do get enough opportunities to pursue their interests and hobbies.

Point 1: Yes I do believe that teenagers have many opportunities to pursue their own hobbies. Teenagers, besides school, have many other days to spend time on themselves. For example, during the weekends, after school, and even during the school holidays. MOE has arranged many school holidays and also public holidays. During this time, teenagers can do many things like pursuing their hobbies. If teenagers’ hobbies are less physical like reading books or watching videos, they can do it everyday after school! But if their hobbies are more physical and more sporty like basketball or rock climbing, they will have to find places to go and it may be difficult to go during a school day. However they can find time during the weekends, public holidays or school holidays. During school holidays, they have plenty amount of time to plan their trip to an available court to pursue their hobbies. Hence, teenagers do have enough time to pursue their hobbies.

Point 2: Another point I feel teenagers do get enough opportunities to pursue their interest. As MOE have gave school a lot of money to improve and let the school to have more different type of CCA. From CCA, students can get to try new skills and even fell in love with that interest. Furthermore, Schools bring students out for learning journey to try out or learn the different interest and job to let students find their interest. For example, ever since I join the band in primary school. I fell in love with music that lead me started my music journey and continuing band in secondary school. Hence with CCA students get to find their interest and to explore different path way to find what they want to do in the future.

point 3: However, why I feel teenagers do not get enough opportunities to pursue their own interests and hobbies. Teenagers have a lot on their plate, for example, CCA, school work, revision. You do the math, in one day, students have 7hours of school, 3 hours of CCA when we go home it takes around an hour, including our mealtime and shower which is another hour, our sleep time about 7hours. That leaves us with just 5hours to study. If homework were to take an hour, students are left with 4hours for revision and is that enough for teens to pursue their dreams? What about their revision? In short, we are struggle to find time to pursue our interests.

Therefore, I feel that teenagers have ample opportunities to pursue their own hobbies. Reason being, schools have many different activities to learn more about their hobbies and they have time.

No, i believe that teenagers do not get enough opportunities to pursue their hobbies. Firstly, almost all parents believe that teenagers like us should really be focusing on our education and thinking hobbies is just in the way. Sometimes like my friends invite to go play badminton with them, but instead i have say no with a disappointed face because i have <del>outside</del> enrichment classes to attend like piano classes or even tuition. Thus, I'm forced to forgo my hobbies to focus on my studies, as I vision what my parents would do if i never do well in my examination, but torturing myself by not doing what i love. Thus, teenagers in Singapore have a dilemma of having to choose between education or theri hobbies. INCOMPLETE; UNGRADED; USE THE 5 STEP PROCESS!

No, teenagers do not get enough opportunities to pursue their hobbies.

Firstly, adults and parents believe that teenagers should focus on their studies and that some hobbies are a waste of time. Sometimes, when my friends ask me out to go shopping or play basketball (Which is the hobby? Don't go off tppic) with them, I have to decline and regretfully inform them that I have to attend tuition. I am constantly under parental pressure to do well in my studies, and hanging out with my friends just gives my mother the message "I don't care about my grades". Hence, teenagers in Singapore face the dilemma of having to choose between their studies or their hobbies.

Secondly, teenagers have major tests and examinations to prepare for every quarter of every year of school, and parents make use of any free time for their children to attend tuition or extra classes, eliminating the opportunity to pursue any interests. You should insert your own personal example / experienve here.

However, it can be argued that simple hobbies such as reading can be done anywhere such as on the commute to and from school and pose no threat to the decline of grades and rather improves grades. Despite hobbies being beneficial to school, I feel like the time that some teenagers have to enjoy what they want is too limited as a big part of their time is used for school, tuition, homework and revision. Therefore, teenagers do not get enough opportunities to pursue their hobbies.

• Offers perspective(s) with some development
• Some attempt at using a range of vocabulary and structures

GROUP 8: No. Why might teenagers not have opportunities to do so? [Use the 5 steps process]

Firstly, teenagers nowadays have a lot of work or commitments that they have to attend to such as CCAs or the homework given by teachers. Due to the high demands of the intensive curriculum <del>taught</del>, people will start spending more time trying to catch up with their studies <del>understand </del>than <del>doing</del> pursuing their hobbies Some people even have sports CCAs after school which means they have to devote time to training instead of developing their interests. Some people already find it hard to cope in sec 3 between CCA commitments and their academics. For example ,I take around 7 subjects, which is a lot to handle if you factor in the difficulty of the subject such as additional mathematics. It is quite a difficult subject for me as my math foundation is weak. Therefore, i spend a lot of time for me to understand a concept. I am also the vice chairperson of NPCC. With this additional workload, i have to oversee my other peers to make sure they are doing alright and thing be smooth during my CCA. This hence gave me little time to do what i like such as playing the guitar. As Bill Watterson said 'There is not enough time to do all, the nothing we want to do'. The amount of schoolwork and high expectations make it difficult to have our free time as we have to prioritize our school life

Secondly, teenagers are stressed to meet the expectation of their parents. Many parents do still think that studies take priority over anything else as they think a good education will lead to a good qualification, hence getting a better job. Parents will do whatever it takes to make sure their expectation is met. The problem is most teenagers spend a lot of time at home trying to understand concepts so that they can do well for the upcoming test. However some people do not know how to do it, hence spending a lot of time just studying a concept, taking away their own free time to do their personal things. For example, I was having a very hard time to understand a math concept and there was an upcoming weighted assessment. To meet my parents expectations, i spent a lot of time at night to learn the concept while doing my homework. It again took away a lot of my time to play my guitar. An interview by the Minister of Education Mr Chan Chun Sing in an open forum with a group of students, shown that parents uphold high expectations for their children. This hence makes it difficult to have our free time because we are trying to meet our parents expectations.

However some might say that yes, students get enough free time to do their personal things as the education system gives opportunities to show their talents. Sometimes, schools have competitions for students to show their talents, which helps students to set away time for students to pursue their hobbies. For example, some of my friends were selected to<del> </del><del>dragged out of their lessons </del>to go and participate in their sport competitions such as badminton or even basketball, which happens to be their hobbies. This hence lets them to have time to show their talents

Despite this, it may seem contradicting as many students still take a lot of time to catch up with work that they miss lessons. This would hence make it worse for teenagers as they would spend more time to catch up with work than actually have free time. Furthermore, they would spend more
time on doing their revision that they personal time to do their hobbies is lessened, hence there is lesser time for them to practice. Therefore i will say students do not have enough time these days to their hobbies

<del>I agree that teenagers these days do not get enough opportunities to pursue their own interests and hobbies as the teenagers these days are unwilling to leave their room or phone screen to find hobbies or interests. This is probably because teenagers now have all their entertainment in their phone screens through forms like games, videos or livestreams and as they have grown up with them early in their childhood, they find most things mundane in comparison.
For example, through a personal experience with my slightly younger cousin who is dubbed an "Ipad kid", I learnt that they do not leave their mobile devices as they entertain themselves however they want with their devices that it is not possible with just the playground or just the television. This is maybe due the fact that the there is an agoridom the device use which learns the user's preferences and pushes similar content which creates an addicting feeling that this entertainment will not end unlike with a television where the entertainment ends when the show ends or like at a playground when the game ends or a friend leaves and there is the feeling that "it's not fun anymore" or " I am bored". By having all their possible entertainment at their fingertips, they become reliant on it as their main source of entertainment and are unwilling to explore other hobbies or interests.
It is with these reasons that I agree that teenagers these days do not get enough opportunities to pursue their own interests and hobb</del>ies

Your entire response is out of point / not addressing the topic; the Qn is about 'not having enough opportunties' so how does the addiction to gadgets stripaway opportunities to pursure your hobbies? no link<del>

</del>

Having a Hobby is very important to me for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, having a hobby gives me something fun to do during my free time or when I've completed all of my examinations. A hobby is more than just an ordinary activity. A hobby can help to relieve much of your stress, it can help you to develop new skills and build your own identity. Personally, my hobby is reading, I like to learn new information and would happily use hours of my free time to do so, reading also expands my vocabulary and eases my mind into a state of tranquility. Without any hobby, i wouldn't know what i would be doing in my free time and would have wasted hours of my precious time accomplishing nothing. This is why a hobby is important to me.

• Offers perspective(s) with some development
• Some attempt at using a range of vocabulary and structures

yes i do think having a hobby is important. Firstly, hobbies can be a way to connect with others. When people have something in common they like they tend to get along well as they share similar interests and thats is the reason why interest groups exist. They exist to bring people with similar interest and passion together. Secondly having a hobby will help you relieve stress. As the saying goes "all work and no play makes jack a dull boy" , I cannot imagine a life where one is swarmed with school work and stress, with no hobby to take the stress off an individual. All these stress and workload will soon take its toll on one's mental and physical health. lastly hobbies is a way to teach one values they would not find in a textbook. For example in taekwondo there are five core values courtesy integrity perseverance self control amd indomitable spirit. Although one may not regard these values as necessary in their life, but these values will bring you far in the future
