Audrey Wu

MU-16 Cello

2020/4/3

Four Musicians Who Inspire Me

The first and most important musician who inspires me, is French cellist Pierre Fournier. When I first saw him playing Bach, his performance caught my eyes and ears. It sounds so wonderful, soft and gentle. And the perfect bow change inspires me a lot. So far, all of the recording of Bach recordings are my favorite. I can improve on my playing by take notes.

Jacqueline du Pré is my favorite British cellist. I love her powerful performance, and I really love her Schumann concerto. It gives me a lot of inspiration for the notes, the slurs, the dynamic markings and the colors of melody. Her performances make me more sensitive about the sounds when I practice. I am always listening carefully to every note.

David Oistrakh is my favorite violinist. I love when he plays his Stradivarius violin. The sound is so beautiful, very delicate and clear but also brilliant. I am always looking for a perfect sound like this: bright, clear and delicate. When I am practicing, I can focus more on my projection.

Japanese violinist Akiko Suwanai is my most respected soloist. She has such beautiful sounds that I am always looking for. My previous professor had told me the reason why Akiko has such delicate and perfect performances. When she was studying at Juilliard, she will always record what she practiced, and listened after recording. I think recording when practicing is a great idea, I can try to record and improve any mistakes I hear from the recordings.

All of them have almost perfect techniques, but also have their personality and styles in any pieces they play, that’s what I am going to learn about.

https://open.spotify.com/track/2gMCNoPiMjuVMmzQRlOXMV?si=4cf2033fdbcf4c86

https://open.spotify.com/track/0dItJhRM7C0bwOzBwNFMKH?si=640afac837ff4389

https://open.spotify.com/track/3jTvAuDKMChyd3sbqc19qn?si=3493b6278dd747ed

https://open.spotify.com/album/1bzA271dRmKWe4p1KOXzkH?si=N90BAPVBT1SKgd2y7j7v4w
