I personally like to regard teaching as an art form, rather than science. This is because teaching is about dealing with humans, in which the transfer of knowledge can only be done through proper orchestrations of communicating information, just like how a film director tells a story, or a maestro performs an orchestra.

There may be small or significant part of science in it, but at the end of the day the product would be appreciated as an art piece.

1. Behaviourist Methods are Not Entirely Passé

Some of the traditional methods in teaching students through the concept of reinforcement and punishment may still work very well today.

This I have experienced during my diploma study, in which the lecturers were very stingy with marks and very strict in enforcing rules (late submissions and incomplete designs were not given marks). This resulted to very technically competent architectural graduates. However, the methods should be practiced moderately as students nowadays may behave differently from what we expect.

Thus, the lecturer first needs to understand the personality and the diversity of his/her students very well, which relates to the 2nd point.

The lecturer is advised not to underestimate the diversity and personalities of students. Active students may traditionally be regarded good students while passive students are not.

However, this may not always be the case as passive students may have more ideas and may also be smarter, but they are limited by their anxiety and timid personality.

Thus, it is important to apply constructive approach to teaching and learning to include all members in the classroom to participate in the process. But more importantly, try to approach passive students using less intimidating ways.

3. What Matters Most is Knowledge Transfer

The apparent evidence whether a knowledge is being taught is measured through the knowledge transfer performed by the students/ graduates themselves.

Therefore, it cannot be stressed enough that it is important to highlight on the deep learning through cognitive approach. Teaching and learning should acknowledge how students are going to understand, attempt and relate the concept of the new knowledge with their prior understanding. A lecturer should be very creative with the way they want the students to remember new knowledge.

However, the nature of teaching as it happens, is also very scientific in the sense that it is a systematic process driven by curiosity, that itself is a result of accumulated information from previous improvement process.

There are many ways for a teacher to evaluate and deliver their teaching, but they can be achieved mostly through data and information, just like how a sequential, scientific inquiry would be warranted. Thus, it is not possible to disregard the ‘science’ part in teaching.

I have broken several rules in my life before especially when I was studying in UTM. Not for the sake of being a rebel, but it was more like to challenge myself, to create unpredictable outcomes from it. I managed to do something that other people were too afraid to do, and that gives me a special kind of satisfaction which gets me into doing something even harder.

Don’t be a boring person. Once you are getting to the point where everyone is doing the same thing, you need to be the agent of change. You may have the power and the will, but all you have to do is to take the leap of faith.

Education is creating workers and followers. Too much of this makes us forget that every single individual is significant and have their own mission. Education somehow shuts them up, ironically. We ended up producing ‘the other guys’ in the workplace, empowering no one but the employers and the bosses.

The world was not improved by a random guys named Kasem or an Ah Chong, it has been shaped by a Gandhi, a Malala, a Tesla & a Steve. It is not in the names, but the point is your legacy ties well with what you have done for the betterment of the society. People would remember a Kasem or an Ah Chong if they have cured AIDS.

It is rather quite natural for someone to follow the person he/ she admires. This is not until when they get to meet them in person only to be disappointed with them. But having a hero is not so much about blind admiration, but it is to set a standard for your own achievements. If you regard your father who has written 10 books as a hero, you may want to write 20 books. Beat them at their games. Don’t be afraid to achieve perfection as no one has ever achieved it anyway.
