Significance-
The battle took place in a valley that was up to 1,200 yards wide with the British forces being reinforced with prussian soldiers defending against Napoleon. Napoleon's forces were pushed back and defeated causing Napoleon to lose favor in France.  “frustrated by a British naval squadron, he surrendered himself to the commander of the HMS Bellerophon on July 15. He spent the remainder of his life in exile on the island of St. Helena.” This battle was the final straw for Napoleon.

The French nearly lost before it began due to a misreading of the enemy's action Napoleon thinking that the Austrians were withdrawing and sent 2 detachments to intercept them but called them back when he realized the mistake. The battle ended in a victory for the French. This victory helped Napoleon secure his position as first Consul and drove the Austrians mostly out of France.
