13 Pillars of Salah and Taharah

Understanding solat (prayer) and taharah (purity) is essential for every Muslim. Solat becomes obligatory when one is Muslim, adult, and sane, and must be performed with valid conditions such as cleanliness, proper attire, and correct timing.

We learned about the 13 pillars of solat that must be fulfilled for the prayer to be valid, and the things that break solat and should be avoided. Observing the sunnah acts enhances our prayer, while neglecting the sunat ab’adh requires sujud sahwi. We should also avoid makruh actions that may reduce the reward.

In taharah, we focused on wudu and tayammum, both of which purify us before prayer. Knowing their pillars, what breaks them, and how to perform them properly is crucial for maintaining purity.

Lastly, we explored solat in different conditions: during illness, travel (qasr & jama’), and through various voluntary prayers (nawafil) to strengthen our connection with Allah SWT.

Let us strive to improve the quality of our solat and maintain taharah consistently, as these are the foundations of our daily worship and spiritual discipline.

🕌 May Allah accept our prayers and make us among those who establish solat with khusyuk and istiqamah.

Meaning of Zakat:

Zakat means to purify. It is the act of giving a portion of one’s wealth to those who are entitled to receive it. Zakat al-Fitr

• Obligatory for every Muslim during Ramadan, before Eid al-Fitr.

• Given to ensure the poor can also celebrate the day of Eid.

2. Zakat al-Mal (Zakat on Wealth/Income)

• Given when wealth reaches the minimum amount (nisab) and is kept for one full year (haul).

• Includes salary, savings, gold, business income, etc.

✦ The Eight Categories Eligible for Zakat:

1.

🕰 Hajj

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is obligatory at least once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically, mentally, and financially able to perform it.

• Time: Only performed during the specific days of Dhul-Hijjah (8th–13th).

• Main Rituals: Includes Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, standing at Arafah, Muzdalifah, stoning at Mina, animal sacrifice, and cutting/shaving hair.

• Special Feature: The Wuqoof (standing) at Arafah is the peak and core of Hajj — without it, Hajj is not valid.

🌙 Umrah

Umrah is a voluntary act of worship that can be performed at any time of the year.

• Time: No specific month or day required.

• Main Rituals: Includes Ihram, Tawaf (circling the Kaaba), and Sa’i (walking between Safa and Marwah).

• No Arafah: Unlike Hajj, it does not require standing at Arafah or most of the other Hajj-specific rituals.

⸻

💫 Etiquette (Adab) of Hajj & Umrah

During Hajj:

• Avoid indecent speech, arguments, and disobedience.

• Show patience and remain committed to acts of worship like dhikr, du’a, Qur’an recitation, and kindness to others.

• Be mindful of the crowd and respect people’s space.

During Umrah:

• Begin with sincere intention (niyyah).

• Maintain respect, humility, and good manners throughout.

• Avoid raising voices or arguing — keep focused on seeking Allah’s mercy.

⸻

🌟 Spiritual Values in Hajj and Umrah

• Al-Taḍḥiyyah (Sacrifice): Leaving behind comfort, family, and daily routine shows deep devotion to Allah.

• Taqwā (God-consciousness): Every step taken in these rituals reminds us to be aware of Allah in all aspects of life.

⸻

🕌 Conclusion: The Meaning of Hajj and Umrah 🕌

Hajj and Umrah are not just physical journeys — they are spiritual transformations. These acts of worship teach us patience, sacrifice, humility, and submission to Allah. They strip away status, ego, and distractions, reminding us that we are all equal in front of Allah. Whether it’s the obligation of Hajj or the voluntary blessing of Umrah, both renew our hearts and strengthen our connection to our Creator. 🌸

(Suhailah et al., 2021)

True worship in Islam is not just about doing — it’s about why and how we do it. With pure intention (niat), righteous action (amal), and excellence (ihsan), every deed becomes valuable in the sight of Allah. These three are the key to living a life that pleases Him.
