The second lesson was about the history and the culture of Malta and in the afternoon, the focus was on discussion. We had to discuss various things about traveling and had to find solutions to different given problems as a group.

In the first lesson we discussed about the news, beginning with the one-minute-news of the BBC. We trained our vocabulary for understanding common phrases used in daily news. After that, we improved our skills in communication in business topics and learned common phrases used to describe financial and economic situations.
For the second lesson the topic was “English Mania”. We discussed, how English is becoming more important as an international Language than ever before. We also watched a TED talk about this topic, where we learned for example, that China is the County with the most English-speaking people in the world and that the language doesn’t spread, because the English-speaking countries are pushing the others to do so, but the other countries are doing it on their own.
In the afternoon, we discussed education and the differences between educational systems across different countries. Finally we combined our new knowledge of the day in a fictional scenario, where our group was a committee which had to decide between different applicants for a scholarship.

Everyone has one favourite and had to find arguments for his own candidate. As a result we also had to find negative aspects of the other candidates. After discussing a while we kicked two of the applicants out. Then we switched to the premise, that we should look objective on the remaining candidates. We had a guided tour through the historic town of Valetta, where we visited many of the old buildings and learned a lot of the history of Malta. During the guided tour we saw many interesting details, you wouldn’t see as a tourist without a guide. As the guide was organised by the school, he always made sure, that everyone is learning new vocabulary. For example, there are 14 watch towers along the coastline on Malta whereas 7 where built on Gozo. There is only one big watch tower on Comino, called Saint Mary's tower. These towers where important for the defense of Malta against many enemies like the Turks. Because there was no school, we booked a cultural excursion to the neighbour island Gozo and the small island Comino, which lays between the two bigger islands. We took a boat, which departed in Sliema and cruised along the east coast of Malta. During the cruise, we learned historical facts of the towns, we passed and saw the place where Saint Paul shipwrecked on his way to Rome. We also learned about the ancient defensive system of the islands as we passed by the numerous old watchtowers. On our way to Gozo the ship also stopped at a grotto, and we were able to appreciate the pristine Water inside the grotto and around the island.
On Gozo we had a bus tour to the capital city Victoria and had time to visit the citadel. After that, the bus tour continued to the west side of the island and we stopped at the “Inland Sea”, which is like a lake, but is connected to the Sea with a cave. The cave was visited by boat, and we could see the cliffs from the seaside close. After that, the tour continued to the island Comino, where we had time to enjoy the famous blue lagoon. After a short stop, we travelled back to Sliema.

As a consequence we should make a plan for breaking out of the prison. For this task we only had a city plan, a floorplan of the prison and a timetable of the day in this prison. Together we made up a real good plan to escape the prison. In the morning, we started with a lesson about the UK. We learned a lot of facts I didn’t know and discussed some common misconceptions. In the second lesson, the focus was on “Equality”. The discussion was about the differences between men and women. We had a debate whether we are born with the differences or society gives us the differences. Our group didn’t agree with all statements, and this was a good starting point, to practice the newly learned vocabulary. In the afternoon, we did some exercises as a group. The first activity was, that as survivors of a plane crash we had to decide which items we would need to survive until we get help. After our decisions, we compared our results with the recommended solution made by experts and the result was, that we probably wouldn’t survive for a very long time. We learned some architectural specialities about the Maltese buildings and why the old houses are boult how they are built. After our break, we had one final lesson, where we reflected everything, we learned in this week and talked about how we would use our new learned skills in future. We then had a farewell with all the other course participants and our teacher.
