We are committed to institutionalize service-learning in our university. We have made the official mandate of this initiative and is in the implementation process. We can contribute to Uniservitate's sustainability by actively participating in and co-creating its regional ecosystem such as hosting forums, workshops, and training sessions that build capacity for other members. In addition, we can contribute by conducting research with other institutions and sharing case studies, and best practices, offering expert faculty as mentors to newer faculties.

component.

Firstly,  in the formation of  our students as “Persons for and with others” : discerning leaders and citizens distinguished by their character, professional competence, compassion, conscience, courage, cultural-rootedness, and commitment to community and the common good.

Secondly, we promote service-learning by nurturing a culture of reflection-in-action — where academic rigor meets lived experience in the margins. Service-learning becomes integral, that is, when it is not an add-on but a way of proceeding —  grounded in the Ignatian pedagogical paradigm  of Context, Experience, Reflection, and and Discerned Action.

·      Through discernment, accompaniment,  dialogue and “journeying”   with S-L partner communities, we form students who not only learn about society but learn with and from it.  Our  strategic commitment #2,  impels us to intentionally “engage communities as prophetic leaders and citizens”  . S-L becomes integrative component of this.

• Through a Social Formation Program designed for S-L faculty,  where we form formators who intentionally turn  “S-L classes” as spaces of encounter and transformation, where learning becomes a path to loving service.

• Through Maximizing Service-Learning as a Platform for Integrating Teaching, Research, and Community Engagement.  By positioning S-L at the intersection of teaching, research, and community engagement, this strengthens the academic, social, and ethical formation of students while simultaneously producing research-informed, community-centered outcomes aligned with Jesuit educational ideals.

• Our main contribution probably to Uniservitate’s sustainability is our humble attempts at forming new generations of educators/formators and students who embrace service-learning as a way of life — a lifelong commitment to be “contemplatives in action”  

At Universidad Francisco de Vitoria we understand learning and service as deeply interconnected social practices. All undergraduate students, regardless of their degree program, enroll in Anthropology and Social Responsibility courses during their second year, completing 50 hours of social practice in collaboration with more than 150 NGOs across the Community of Madrid. Through these courses and the broader core curriculum, we aim to foster the holistic development of our students, encouraging them to ask meaningful questions that lead them closer to truth and beauty. At the same time, their work contributes tangibly to the common good, as they dedicate their time, knowledge, and—most importantly—their attention to individuals facing social exclusion, hardship, and vulnerability.

As a Catholic university in Indonesia, we began to realise that SL was one way of fulfilling our mandate as a Catholic university. This realisation began when we first learned about SL, but also – coincidentally – when we, as members of the Catholic Higher Education Institutions in Indonesia, developed the aspiration to strengthen our Catholic identity.

1. From there, the first step in promoting SL was to instil the awareness that SL is integral to our identity as a Catholic university. This awareness must first be possessed by educators, especially lecturers, but also by students and partners.

We realise that there must be one or some pilot projects... perhaps one or two study programmes will try to implement it, then it will spread to others. 

What do we look for/find in Uniservitate?

-       We need a network where we can join, learn, share, colaborate with other institutions, not feel alone, but be helped to grow in practising and developing this service learning.

-       We need Support for Capacity-building for faculty members, SL coordinators, student representatives dan community partners

-       We need support for some lectures to get SL diploma, so that they can be more professional to be the future coordinators or actors.

How can we contribute to the Sustainability of Uniservitate?

We believe that by implementing Service Learning as a policy in our university education, we can become a small link in the entire Service Learning constellation. We want to become a laboratory for humanity. Who knows, maybe in the future there will be many good practitioners who are experts in this field so that they can spread it to others in Indonesia and elsewhere.

Indonesia has a complex community, mainly due to its diversity in religion, culture and ethnicity, but also its political, social and economic situation. This makes it very challenging to implement service learning. We hope that through research and publications, we will be able to produce good resources for service learning practices in the future

1) ¿Cómo promovemos el aprendizaje-servicio en nuestra institución?

Para la Universidad San Jorge el Aprendizaje Servicio es mucho más que una metodología y se trabaja de manera transversal en prácticamente todas las áreas de conocimiento y titulaciones de manera transversal e interdisciplinar, fieles a nuestros valores y principios fundacionales y el propósito de la institución, acercarnos y apoyar a través de la educación, a los más vulnerables.

Desde la docencia, la investigación y las buenas prácticas en el desarrollo de diferentes acciones de enseñanza-aprendizaje, abordamos el aprendizaje y servicio para el desarrollo de proyectos con propósito e impacto en instituciones y organizaciones que desarrollan una labor social y la mejora de la calidad de vida de las personas.

Algunas de nuestras Cátedras con empresas tienen, lideradas por grupos de investigación y equipos de trabajo formadas por personas representantes de la compañía y en algunos casos estudiantes y doctorandos, desarrollan actividades/proyectos de Aprendizaje y Servicio. Con esto no solo damos respuesta al propósito, sino que garantizamos el impacto y la transferencia de conocimiento y resultados a la sociedad.

2) ¿Qué buscamos / encontramos en Uniservitate?

Nos hemos incorporado recientemente a la red (septiembre de 2025) con el objetivo de aportar, con el desarrollo de nuestras acciones, valor e incrementar el alcance con la participación de nuestra comunidad educativa de estudiantes y docentes.

3)¿Qué podemos aportar para la sustentabilidad de Uniservitate ?

A través del desarrollo de acciones sociales y de investigación y sobre todo aquellas que se puedan desarrollar con el apoyo de organizaciones y/o empresas interesadas en la transferencia de los resultados y conocimiento en su entorno laboral y profesional.

For KU Leuven solidarity means fostering an engaged university community. We support 40 service-learning courses, student-led initiatives, and partnerships with over 60 societal organizations.
Also other programs like Academics for Development, awards like the Future Proof Award and the Science Shop help students connect their academic work with real-world challenges.

2) What do we look for/find in Uniservitate?

A strong vision and bottom up community. Also the link with the identity and mission of our Universities is key. Also the collaborative dialogue is very motivating. The challenge we face is time and cost for the teachers in the faculty. With a growing number of students, it is difficult for teachers to keep their motivation. It is interesting to embed Service-Learning in a broader vision on Engaged Learning; so we also want to recognise other contributions in solidarity with society such as curricula focussing on inclusion and sustainability.

3) How can we contribute to the sustainability of Uniservitate ?

Our approach is dynamic: we’re not just implementing a fixed plan, but actively co-creating a strategy that responds to societal needs. By supporting the needs of our faculty we can build more strategies to involve more faculty by programme directors and faculty boards. We can do so by also recognising broad engagement initiatives of faculty.

Tal vez lo que faltaría es a nivel de los nodos, ya que en el caso del nodo Latam el acompañamiento de la universidad coordinadora es muy discontinuo, es decir, se desaparecen por extensos periodos de tiempo, lo que enfría las cosas, y luego de varios meses vuelven a aparecer, y esto hace que se ralenticen los procesos y no haya continuidad. Pareciera que hay que iniciar nuevamente cada vez que vuelven a comunicarse. Y es un gran equipo el de la universidad coordinadora, pero lo que se puede observar es que no tienen el tiempo para dedicarle a Uniservitate, ya que tienen muchas otras responsabilidades en su propia institución.

We turn to Uniservitate because it offers a global community rooted in shared values: Catholic social teaching, integral human development, and education that transforms both learners and communities. The frameworks, research, and examples we encounter through the network strengthen our own practice. We also appreciate its emphasis on reflection, faith, and social responsibility, which resonates with our Lasallian-Benildean identity. Most importantly, we hope to learn from and contribute to a community that sees Service-Learning as a genuine path toward the common good.

We are eager to support the proposed Uniservitate Diploma Course in whatever way may be helpful—whether through sharing modules, cases, or resources. We also welcome member institutions who wish to explore international Service-Learning opportunities in Manila; Benilde can host institutions in our existing programs or design customized thematic immersions. By sharing our expertise and contexts, we hope to contribute to the ongoing growth and relevance of Uniservitate.

Integration into the Curriculum

At CUG, we believe for true academic integration, service-learning must not be a one-off add-on but part of the curriculum design, linked to course objectives, and supported institutionally. As a result, some of our key strategies include:

               i.      Embedding service-learning in the syllabus: linking service tasks to academic objectives, assessment, and reflection assignments.

             ii.     Faculty development: preparing instructors to design service-learning components, build community partnerships, supervise reflection, and assess outcomes.

          iii.      Institutional support: including service-learning in the mission statement, budgeting for it, aligning it with strategic plans, offering institutional infrastructure (e.g., service-learning offices) to support faculty and students. 

           iv.      Institutionalizing through curriculum structures: e.g., having service-learning in general education requirements, offering multiple service-learning courses across disciplines that instead of one department offering service learning in Isolation, it should be implemented university wide thereby embedding in departmental curricula rather than as isolated offerings.

What do we look for or find in Uniservitate

CUG should

At UCAC, we promote Service-Learning (SL) by bridging our academic "Excellence" with "Solidarity," as outlined in our motto.

• Institutionalization in strategic planning: We have officially integrated SL into our institutional strategic plan, ensuring it is a fundamental pedagogical tool rather than just an extracurricular activity.

• The "Service-Learning Awards": We host dedicated annual awards (the UCAC Service-Learning Awards) to incentivize student ingenuity and faculty participation, showcasing projects like urban waste management in Yaoundé or school gardens in Bangui.

• Curricular synergy: We embed SL into diverse faculties—from Social Sciences and Management to Theology and Health Sciences—ensuring that community engagement is a credit-bearing, natural extension of the classroom.

• Ecological commitment: We use events like the "UCAC Ecological Week" to mobilize the entire university community around environmental stewardship (integral ecology), aligning with the Laudato Si’ action platform.

• Being "Multipliers": Because UCAC serves so many countries in our region, every time we strengthen SL on our campus, we are planting seeds that our students will carry back to Chad, Gabon, Congo, and beyond.

• Telling our Story: By documenting our successes and failures, we help the global team understand what works in Africa. This keeps the network grounded in reality and ensures it stays relevant for years to come.
