They also offer the following indicators of internationally-minded people (Savage):
  • Knowledge, understanding and appreciation of different cultures
  • Increased self-awareness
  • Increased empathy
  • Ability to collaborate with peers from different backgrounds
  • Deepening knowledge and understanding of global issues
  • Ability to see themselves as responsible, global citizens
  • Language skills

Let's consider these ideas as we work on establishing a definition for international mindedness as it manifests at OYIS, and creating links between that definition and the rooms we host or help students and parents host.

This opens up wonderful conversations about cultural parallels and differences. At OYIS, we often look at works from places distant from Japan, but in English L&L, studying Japanese works in translation also helps international students reach new understandings about the country they live in.
