Overall, while work has been done for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, not enough has been done. The Recommendations of the “bringing them home report” are a key aspect where the government failed. 2 years ago, on the twentieth anniversary of the report several articles, reports and action plans were made to address the lack of action being done. To fix our wrongdoings and help those we have hurt, action must be done to fulfil the recommendations.
(below, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flag)

How it affects today:

While it might not sound that important the lack of action regarding the recommendations has had serious effects to this day. Due to the government's inactivity, thousands of people still suffer from trauma causing negative outcomes to occur. Results from the Australian Bureau of statistics show that the stolen generation and their families and descendants are “50 per cent more likely to have been charged by police, 30 per cent less likely to report being in good health, 15 per cent more likely to consume alcohol at risky levels and 10 per cent less likely to be employed”.

At the time when they were released, the government disregarded the recommendations. While they provided 63 million dollars over four years for things such as culture and language programs, family support, parenting programs and counselling and wellbeing centres, the recommendations were simply ignored at the time.

Between 2000-2007 several inquiries were made to the government, urging them to act. In 2007, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner reflected on the report, saying “For Aboriginal people, the years since the Bringing Them Home report have been filled with great hope as well as lost opportunities” and “Ten years on, the recommendations of the Bringing Them Home report still stand as the starting point for a national reconciliation process.”

He was speaking only the truth, while there had been change and some closure provided, ultimately not enough had been done, many opportunities had already been lost. While the recommendations still stand as a “starting point” the government had yet to initiate anything.

It was only in 2008 that (under a new government) a proper, public apology was made and recommendations were finally put into motion. However, it still wasn’t over yet. After an assessment carried out from non-government agencies, it was revealed that only 1 in 10 of recommendations had been put into action or fulfilled.
(below,

The release of the "Bringing them home" report in 1997 was a breakthrough for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. After the years of silent abuse that people had endured, the truth finally fully came into light.

Within the said report, the government proposed a list of recommendations to help make things right. However, did the recommendations end up going into effect at all?
