Who are they?
She is a 12 year old Brazilian girl that moved to Germany one year ago, only speaking Portuguese. One parent works for the UN and they are unsure of when they will move back to Brazil, but it could be at anytime. She does not have the same broad experiences that her peers at an international school have.
What makes them unique?
She is a diligent, thorough, motivated student that wants to please her teachers. She translates all of her notes into Portuguese each day so that she can better understand and further her learning. Maria is very kind and works well with all of her peers.
What motivates them?
She is the oldest student in her grade because of her English level, yet she is not self-conscious of this. Instead, she prides herself when she can teach a concept to another student and really enjoys this quiet type of leadership role. However, she is still aware of her age and strives to improve herself daily. She is still in touch with friends from Brazil and feel anxious if she thinks she is 'behind' them in her own learning.
Why does she behave the way she does?
Maria has a strong attachment to her home country and culture and misses it very much. She is unsure of when her family will move back but she fears being 'behind' so she often creates extra work for herself or asks for more work from her teachers to do at home.

Who are they?
Aria is a shy and insecure student who has a tough time making connections with her peers and teachers. She doesn't like to be touched and often walks with her hair in her face and her head hanging down. Although English is Aria's 3rd language, she experiences difficulty in reading and writing in all languages. This is her 3rd year at the English speaking international school, but she still struggles with building letters and sounds. She is often withdrawn in whole group classroom situations but receives EAL support daily and is pulled out of class for small group instruction.
What makes them unique?
Aria is funny when she let's you see that side of her and is an excellent artist. She can communicate her thoughts through her drawings. She loves to dance and sing but, only in the privacy of our own home or in a place of true comfort. She loves animals and share stories of her pets.
What motivates them?
Aria loves to learn through games, songs or drawings. She enjoys the outdoors and is encouraged to do more 'outdoor learning' activities. Her motivation in any task increases only when she has truly built a trust with the teacher and the students in her group. She thrives on positive interactions and encouragement but also a lot of patience.
Why does she behave the way she does?
Aria didn't learn to speak until she was 4 years old and has always had gaps in her learning. Her family doesn't communicate much at home and her parents don't have a very strong relationship. She is anxious when talking about her home life so is often withdrawn.
