Increased dependancy on parent and exposure to painful experiences. A toddler with chronic illness may be consistently exposed to pain. A toddlers normal development includes a period of autonomy vs shame&doubt. They are trying to create a greater sense of self control and individualization. Children with chronic illness may lack in this area as their pain causes them to be more dependent on their parent for needs and emotional support. The child may not want to leave their side to go play with others (decrease socialization, play time), or may not want to get up and be active due to pain (physical &motor growth).
-fallon

It can be caused by increased stressors, worries, disagreements for treatments, or family disfunction due to the constant care giving role of both parents for their sick child. Nurses can help parents by exploring support systems that make it attainable for the parents to nurture their relationship with one another.
- Larissa

The parents of a child with a chronic illness can be strongly affected by the stress that accompanies the needs of the child. The child may need to have frequent medical appointments which can cause financial stress. Additionally, the child may require frequent modifications to and assistance with daily life tasks which can consume a lot more time that the parent may not have, especially if they have multiple kids, job, other commitments etc.

Increased stress can occur when a child has chronic illness. This can be stress surrounding balancing work and personal life, finances to care for the child, time away from work to care for the child, balancing attention between other family members and friends as well as finding time for the parents to care for themselves. When a child has chronic illness this can disrupt the activities of daily life as well as the relationships within the family (for example between the mother and father if the care of the child causes them to neglect their own relationship to each other).
-Rae-Anne

Parents become consumed with the care of their child with a chronic illness or disability, at the expense of nearly everything else in their lives. Parents might feel that the demands upon them have no end (such as trips to the doctor's office or preparation of special meals). Parents may feel constantly tired and never able to find energy to do anything else. Time spent with a spouse and one's own personal interests and hobbies is often given up. -Shubhneet
