Heroin enters the brain and bonds to opioid receptors. This affects many things like breathing, heart rate, sleep, and pain receptors. While symptoms do not change with dose, the intense feeling does increase when higher levels are used.

Short Term Effects

Heavy feelings in the arms and legs

Dry mouth

Decreased mental function

Going back and forth between consciousness

Severe itching

Vomiting

Long Term Effects

Heart infection

Liver and Kidney failure

Constipation

Insomnia

Sexual dysfunction for men

Irregular menstrual cycles for women

Lung Complications

Heroin can stay in the body for a wide range of times. Sometimes it only stays in the body for 30 minutes or up to six hours. This is because it depends on how fast your body can break the chemicals down, it also depends on how much heroin you take.

Death can occur when a person takes too much heroin and they experience hypoxia. Hypoxia is when a person doesn't get enough oxygen to the brain, and they die. Naloxone is a drug that if administered immediately after overdose, it will reverse the affect of the overdose. The drug binds to the opioid receptors and blocks the heroins affects.

Testing
Most tests on the scene use color tests like a nitric acid light test. Chemical tests will separate the main compounds in opioids and will either weigh them or use a spectroscopy device to analize the chemical.

Benefits
The user gets a sense of euphoria when on the drug. There are no health benefits.
