Verbs Followed by Infinitive

These verbs are typically followed by the infinitive form of another verb:

• Want: I want to eat.

• Hope: She hopes to travel next year.

• Plan: They plan to visit Paris.

• Decide: He decided to leave early.

• Agree: She agreed to help me.

• Expect: We expect to finish the project soon.

Verbs Followed by Gerund

These verbs are typically followed by the gerund form of another verb:

• Enjoy: I enjoy reading.

• Avoid: She avoids eating junk food.

• Consider: He considered moving to a new city.

• Suggest: They suggested going to the beach.

• Finish: We finished cleaning the house.

• Mind: Do you mind opening the window?

Verbs That Can Be Followed by Both

Some verbs can be followed by either the infinitive or gerund, but the meaning may change:

• Remember:

  • Gerund: I remember meeting her (I have a memory of meeting her in the past).

  • Infinitive: Remember to call her (Don’t forget to call her in the future).

• Stop:
