What activities have you carried out in your class that have knowingly or unknowingly highlighted or celebrated international-mindedness?

Using the internet, students are asked to do a weekly journal on scientific research from other regions. They pick a topic they are interested in and would read internationally published scientific journals on topics that they are interested in. After getting a sense of what is happening in other places, they would comment and share their thoughts and reflections on what they read. Teachers would give them feedback and students are also encouraged to read and comment on each other’s posts.

Scientific research affects the global community, and it is important to engage students in open and safe discussions about different ongoing issues such as global warming, COVID-19 and its vaccine. The weekly journal reflection they do also aims to strengthen their awareness of what is happening in the international world of scientific research.

For me, it is to embrace diversity and appreciate the different perspectives in the wider, global community. We are to understand our own cultures as well as being aware of and showing empathy for others. Being international-minded is to see and appreciate the strengths in different values, cultures and perspectives, thereby celebrating, learning and creating strength and creating strength from diversities, from fellow humans all around the world.

Global citizens are aware of their responsibilities and rights as members of a global community/society. They not only adopt an empathic and universal mindset that relate with people from other backgrounds/cultures, but also understand their obligations to other species and to the environment. They are aware of certain issues that are happening globally and are active thinkers and problem-solvers so as to find ways to tackle them in order to create a better and more sustainable world.

How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

Biology and other sciences are fields of collaborative inquiry that strive to create a more sustainable world. At our school, students in lower grades participate in transdisciplinary group projects, where they develop their thinking and communication skills by thinking of real-life issues that affect the wider community. They are guided by different subject teachers and engage in open discussions about global and local issues, such as shortage of vaccines and difficult access to clean water. They also get to interview people outside of classroom/school settings and hopefully, the skills they develop are transferable in different aspects of their learning.

During IBHL Topic 9, we talked about girdling and watched videos on how and why people girdle trees in other countries. Students are quite surprised to see how girdling is done since it is not a common tree treatment in Hong Kong.

Students at lower grades are learning about nutrients and the digestive system. We discuss and evaluate the food/diet from different cultures, Indian, Greek, Polish, etc. Students seem to be fascinated to learn about the different cuisine (and they’re generally excited when food is involved) and could still get similar nutrient nourishment.
