Segregation in America had an impact on how children perceive others and themselves as studied by psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark. I had learned of the study in psychology class and it was really impactful to see the dolls used in the actual study.

Organization within small communities can make big impacts. The Greensboro sit-in of 1960 are a example of how college students in small communities had a national impact. As someone who was born and raised in Greensboro I love to see this history represented on the national stage at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

American history often depicts a graceful, beautiful, and clean picture of western expansion leaving out the cost of human lives of its indigenous people to "develope" the land. The National Museum of the American Indian sheds light on that dark history.

The Dr. Martian Luther King Jr memorial shows a strong man breaking free from the mountain of oppression in a difiant stance.

At the National Museum of American History pins for celebrating the civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr were on display. We continue to celebrate him and all his work, but we should also take time to remind ourselves the work has yet to be finished.

Frederick Douglass may not have had any formal education yet speaking on his own experiences of struggles and hopes aided the abolishionist movement. All can aid in movements in some form regardless of personal status.

Having the right to safe, unsegregated public transportation is something I am thankful for after learning about how civil rights activists fought for this very service I use.

The Lincoln Memorial was stunning from the view inside the Washington Monument. So glad I was able to have unscheduled time to explore the capital.

Seeing the plethora of names of fallen veterans was eye opening. They laid down their lives for movements bigger than themselves for people in countries they may have never known.

Using laws of oppression against oppressors is a powerful thing. It splits the foundation of supportors by showing them the very thing they support is lawfully wrong or even contradictory to statements that powerful figures spout. A famous example is the saying "separate but equal" to justify segregation while the conditions were actually not equal. Which Brown in Brown v Board of Education used to legally end segregation in schools.

I am told I must be strong because no one will be strong for me. I know that. I understand that. I won't accept that. I won't let future generations be raised in a society that expects black girls and women to just be strong because they have to or else. I will change that. We all can change that. Compassion, kindness and empathy are ways we can shape our communities to be nurturing environments for all.
