In Shakespeare’s, Much ado about nothing, Don Pedro plays the role of the cupid by pairing Claudio with Hero and Benedict with Beatrice. Therefore for my first instagram story, the comment reads “He got the girl!” followed by “God give them joy!” over two individual pictures of Claudio and Hero. I based the caption from which Don Pedro says, “I have broken with her father, and his good will obtained: name the day of marriage, and God give thee joy!”. Though these two are Petrarchan lovers, knowing little of each other, Don Pedro played as a wing man and wooed in Claudios name, bringing them together for this happy moment. The next story shows a “power walk” moment of the actor playing Don Pedro with the comment “Me on my way to do what cupid couldn’t @bachelor_benedict @beatrice783” because after his previously successful matchmaking, he finds himself mery with much confidence. Don Pedro planned to bring together Beatrice and Benedict saying,“If we can do this, Cupid is no longer an archer: his glory shall be ours, for we are the only love-gods”. His faith in his tricks is victorious in teaching both deceit and love, and provided us with an enemies to lovers story of two seemingly stubborn characters. Don Pedro demenstraights himself to be a light-hearted character by making this match even after asking for Beatrice’s hand in marriage and swiftly being denied. Although Don Pedro might seem bland on the surface, his character is rich with thought-provoking traits. I illustrated this behavior through a Spotify playlist. For example, when Don Pedro danced with Hero, he requested “Speak low if you speak of love” (Much Ado 2. 1), which suggests that love is a very serious affair to Don Pedro. He asks that Hero soften her voice when she talks about love, and it is no secret that when people lower their voice, it is an indication that the topic at hand is of great importance. In fact, Don Pedro's cupid-like nature helped develop this idea. He could have simply notified Hero of Claudio’s romantic interest; however, Don Pedro decided to surpass expectations and wooed Hero in Claudio’s name. It is clear that Don Pedro will stop at nothing to aid his friends. The song “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” by Randy Newman perfectly encapsulates Don Pedro’s unwavering affection for his companions. In the song, Newman states “You got troubles, I’ve got ‘em too / There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you” (Newman 0:53-1:01), which lines up perfectly with Don Pedro. Despite that, his friendliness can easily be taken advantage of, leaving Don Pedro ridden with shame. This comes to fruition when Don John tricks his half-brother and Claudio into believing that Hero is having an affair with Borachio. John states “I’ll make this short, since she’s already been talked about for too long– [Hero] is unfaithful” (Much Ado 3. 2), this deception leads to Don Pedro and Claudio humiliating Hero at the altar, only for them to discover that their accusations were based on lies. I can imagine a contemporary Don Pedro listening to the song “Dear John” by Taylor Swift and relating to the lyrics. For example, Swift sings “Dear John, I see it now that you’re all gone / Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with? / The girl in the dress cried the whole way home, I should’ve known” (Swift 1:48-2:14). Don Pedro was informed by Dogberry that Hero was falsely slandered and, like Swift, only sees the lies and deception after the wrongdoer has escaped. “The girl in the dress” can refer to Hero, who was left heartbroken at her wedding. One of the things I thought Don Pedro would buy was cupids arrows because he was a wingman making people fall in love, and encouraging Claudio that "if (he) love(s) her, for the lady is very well worthy."Another was a cannon because he was the leader of the war that they had just come back from.
and it also represents his bravery and his very elegant manner like when he says "By my troth, a pleasant-spirited lady".
