Sound is important because it is 50% of the film and therefore, has a huge impact on the final cut of the film. Sound is used to add depth to films to keep the audience immersed in the film and give them full understanding of what's going on. The audience is taken out of reality and placed into the film due to the addition of sound which makes the film suspend disbelief and appear more realistic.

Sound can be designed where different sounds can be layered together to create an atmosphere and communicate with the genre of the film. When there is no sound in a sequence or scene the audience will find themselves getting bored easily not really understanding what's happening on screen. The moving images in the sequence also appear flat and is disengaging for the audience to watch. However, without sound the audience can focus more on the editing and camerawork behind the sequence and pay more attention to the physical work behind it.

When a sequence has sound, the audience takes in both diegetic and non-diegetic sound and hears it layered together e.g. the soundtrack and dialogue. the sequence feels faster as the sounds match the scenes and help them appear more fast paced. The audience has a better understanding of what is being said and what is happening in the scene so they pay more attention to detail. Sound has a huge impact on film as it is essential in film. The scenes will feel slow and uninteresting without sound.

Watch the clip above without sound and first and then play it again with the sound on.

Notice the difference in the pace of the sequence when there isn't any sound compared to when there is. To me at first it just looks like lines moving along the screen, but when sound is added, you realise that there is actually dialogue throughout which leads into the narrative of the film. This wouldn't have been noticeable without sound before.
