Punakha

November 29,2023

Reported by: Deki, coordinator of school helping hands club

In the spirit of community service, the School Helping Hands Club embarked on a heartfelt journey to support the elderly residents of a rural community in Punakha. In a series of events spanning the past month or so, we aimed to address the needs and the well-being of the senior citizens in this place/village which is often overlooked in this region.

Our club organized a variety of programs, including weekly visits by club members to the homes of elderly people in this area. We engaged in conversations, provided friendship, and assisted with daily tasks. Additionally health and wellness lessons were conducted with the help of teachers covering topics such as nutrition, exercise, and mental well-being.

To address their immediate needs, we launched a donation event within the school, collecting essential items like non-perishable food, blankets, and hygiene products donated by the students. The response from the school community was overwhelming, allowing us to create care packages for distribution.

A highlight of our efforts was a community event held at the local community centre in punakha, where we collaborated with local healthcare professionals to offer health check-ups, flu vaccinations, and informative sessions on relevant government schemes for senior citizens.

Therefore the School Helping Hands Club's outreach to the rural elderly community in punakha was a great success. Witnessing the smiles on the faces of the elderly people and knowing that our efforts have made a positive impact reinforces our commitment to community service. We believe that such initiatives not only bridge generational gaps but also instill a sense of empathy and responsibility in the younger generation. As we conclude this chapter, we look forward to future endeavors that continue to make a difference in the lives of those in need.

submitted by: Sonam Dorji 8B

The club students under the guidance and supervision of teachers could visit nursing homes and retirement communities to engage in meaningful conversations even assist with simple tasks like exercise.

Another way the school helped the elderly is by organizing regular intergenerational events. Investing both older members of community and students to come together. These events could include activities such as story telling sessions even exercises classes tailored to the needs and abilities of older individuals. This not only promotes social interaction but also fosters understanding, empathy, and mutual respect among different generations.

By recognizing the challenges faced by the older populations in rural area and taking proactive steps. He said that he fell down and then couldn't wake.

After getting the information to our club, we immediately picked the first aid box and visited to the location. Pitifully we saw him very weak. There we couldn't do anything rather than admitting to hospital. We called for ambulance, mean time we gave him soups and eggs to eat. Then we carried him to road point where ambulance was waiting.

After admitting to hospital we saw him getting better day by day. After five days he was discharged. With his smiling face he said, " Thank You, You saved my life".

Pema Yuden

8 'B'
