Hi everyone, Bethany Murphy here! Below is a picture from when I was at this event TWO years ago. I'm about to graduate, but I've been working on scholarship applications with CFSA since my sophomore year. In this time, I have spent plenty of time revising personal statements and learning how best to answer unexpected questions in mock interviews. I've won some of the scholarships I applied for, and I haven't won others. Regardless if I won or not, the application process has helped me learn more about myself and become a better writer/communicator.

The scholarships I have won have given me some incredible experiences. I spent a summer in Utah conducting research for NOAA under a Hollings Scholarship, went to a gala with astronauts in DC under an Astronaut Scholarship, and next year I'm starting graduate studies in the UK under a Marshall Scholarship! I couldn't have done any of this alone. Thank you CFSA for always encouraging me to pursue new opportunities and supporting me along the way! Also, thank you to my mentors in the college of engineering and in the ROTC program. Go Orange!

Thank you, CFSA! - Justine Hastings

Hello everyone. I hope you and your loved ones are healthy, safe, and well. My name is Justine Hastings. I am writing to say a huge thank you to the CFSA team for always going above and beyond to support my peers and I. This center is truly phenomenal! I always knew about CFSA generally from first year forum resources but I first came across CFSA directly in my HNR 220: The Art of Applying class. CFSA's Director, Jolynn Parker, taught the course and she always offered a helpful hand to my peers and I. She would always encourage us to come to her and CFSA for anything, whether it was to help proofread a cover letter, offer advice on a resume, or to set up a mock interview. My peers and I are glad to know that there exists a center that is always more than willing to help us be successful! I first worked with Jolynn extensively on a scholarship application when she reached out to me about the Truman scholarship. She told me that I would be a strong candidate and encouraged me to apply. This was the moment my life changed for the better. I spent a lot of time responding to application prompts that really got me to think about the importance of leadership and community service. I spent a lot of time thinking about what I want to do in both the near and far future. I always had an idea of what I wanted to do in the future but the application process really got me to think about the specific details and challenges I would face in my field. Not only did Jolynn read my application and give me specific and constructive feedback multiple times but she also helped to set up and implement plenty of mock interviews, both in-person and virtual. Despite being in a pandemic, Jolynn was extremely accommodating and helpful every step of the way. She took the time to check in with me and provide assistance in any way she could. A huge thank you and hats off to her! I would also like to thank the rest of the CFSA team, specifically Melissa Welshans and Adam Crowley, for taking part in the first mock interview and giving me strong feedback that only helped me to improve. Additionally, thank you to everyone who took part in the mock interviews and helped me become more confident in my interviewing skills. I would also like to thank my faculty recommenders - Kelly Chandler-Olcott, Kate Hanson, and khristian kemp-delisser - for writing such strong and detailed letters of recommendations and expressing consistent support. Even though I did not ultimately become a Truman scholar, I became a Truman finalist and I gained insights and skills that I never would have without the application and mock interview process. Thank you again to CFSA for your support and help!

Thank you so much to everyone at CFSA - and especially to Jolynn, who has guided my application processes these past couple of years! I’m grateful not only for the assistance that helped me achieve a Fulbright to do my masters degree in the UK next year, but also for all that I learned about myself and my goals in the process. In encouraging me to better articulate my goals over several application processes, CFSA has also helped me to expand and define them, and helped prepare me to enter my grad program with my best foot forwards. I hadn’t quite realized that graduate school was going to be the path for me until almost a year after graduating from SU (although some of my faculty mentors definitely figured it out long before I did), and I so appreciate all of CFSA's support in finding me the right scholarships to change paths and achieve the career I’m hoping for. Also a huge thanks to both the faculty and professional mentors who’ve been a sounding board for my plans and have written letter after letter in support of Fulbright, Marshall, graduate school, and other scholarship applications - I am so grateful both for what I learned from you during my time at SU and for your continued support and mentorship as an alum.

Celebrating the Journey, Not Just its End

One thing I find beautiful about the human spirit is a desire to celebrate, both in good times and in troubled seasons. So much effort has gone into Syracuse University institutions attempt celebrate the accomplishments of all us students; and I am beyond proud to be a part of such celebratory communities. One such community, the Syracuse University Center for Scholarship & Fellowship Advising, definitely ranks among these. Each May is normally an opportunity for any CFSA student to celebrate our journey at the Chancellor's house. This year the celebration continues for all of us online.

My journey with CFSA began with my 2019 PPIA application and acceptance (which I already know that several of you have received, congratulations!) and continues even as I am a 2020-2021 Fulbright Alternate for a Research Grant in Germany. My excitement and joy undoubtedly has undoubtedly been met by CFSA and I look forward to celebrating the journeys of each of you in this Padlet!
- Sincerely,
Tajanae Harris

Hi everyone:) I can't recall exactly how I found out about CFSA, but I can express the immense gratitude I feel from having done so! Jolynn worked patiently with me as I fielded an overwhelming amount of applications to summer research programs. With her help, what once was a foreign, unapproachable writing style/format to me soon became much easier to navigate. And, in the process, I came to know more about myself and my true aspirations. Jolynn's guidance and support while I was crafting my personal statements facilitated my acceptance to my top choice- the Harvard Stem Cell Institute Internship Program. Although it has been postponed to Summer 2021, I now have this amazing opportunity to look forward to and I owe that in part to her great guidance. Goals that previously seemed unattainable now feel very much in-reach; I'm optimistic about what else I can achieve in the coming years with CFSA's support. I could not thank you enough!

-Ify Ojukwu

Going into this year, I was incredibly uncertain where my post-graduate future would take me. Partially because of how much I wanted to receive the scholarships I was applying for, I couldn't imagine myself actually being awarded them. Jolynn and Melissa and everyone at CFSA were incredibly supportive and without them, I wouldn't have had nearly as successful of a candidacy for the Schwarzman Scholarship. Jolynn helped me through every last-minute revision, through my moments of panic right before the deadline, and through two weeks packed with mock interviews. Having the opportunity to work with such a caring and supportive office has made my final year at Syracuse so much better, and I look forward to hearing about all of the other ways CFSA continues to impact the lives of SU students.

Although it is uncertain whether my program will be able to start in-person in China, the community that my Schwarzman Scholars cohort has already started to build has made me excited for my time in the program in whatever shape it ends up taking. I am incredibly grateful for CFSA and hopefully have pictures to share of the Schwarzman Scholars building sometime soon!!

--Kyle Rosenblum '20

Melissa graciously helped to bring my lived experiences to life for the Greenlining Institute Summer Academy. I wanted the committee to truly understand who I was as an individual and bring my story to the table. Thankfully this approach worked and I was selected as a Health Equity Fellow for the Summer Academy -- my dream fellowship! Unfortunately, this position was canceled due to the CO-VID 19 pandemic. Regardless of the circumstances, she really helped me find my voice through the application and was positive, encouraging, and respectful throughout the entire process. When I told Adam that I was chosen as a semi-finalist for the Emerson National Hunger Fellowship, he and Danielle were quick to conduct a mock interview with me. He has dedicated his time and energy to help me with anything that I needed during my fellowship process. I ended up receiving word that I was chosen as an Alternate for the fellowship. I worked with Jolynn for my Fulbright application and she helped me draft several essays from late summer to the deadline. Although I did not proceed to the semi-finalist round, I took many learning lessons away from the experience working with her. Additionally, her diligent and punctual nature helped me to understand how to effectively edit my statements for future programs. As for SF Fellows, I have not heard a word of my status but I recently have chosen to attend the 12 month MPA Program at The Maxwell School on a full-tuition scholarship! Thank you CFSA for giving me the tools necessary to navigate this past journey and future accolades. As a graduate student here, you will be seeing me from time to time.

With Jolynn and Melissa's support, I applied to two scholarships my senior year: Critical Language Scholarship and Princeton in Africa. They helped me communicate my experiences and ambitions which led me to be an alternate for CLS in Tanzania. The skills I learned throughout the process have been helpful in other applications and I feel so fortunate to have worked with CFSA. I would also like to thank my mentor, Andrea Shaw, who has been such a supportive and understanding mentor.

One of the best decisions I made as a freshman was working as the front desk receptionist at the Honors office. Working there for three semesters and one summer, I got to know and work with so many fabulous people (shout out Kate, Naomi, Hanna, Jolynn, Karen, Danielle, and Maggie) and learned about all of the resources these programs had. I used to check students in for their appointments with Jolynn to work on their scholarship applications. I would read all the scholarship posters around the office as a tidied up. During slow shifts I started writing applications for small scholarships. Now I am the student coming in for my appointments with Jolynn to work on my large-scale applications.

CFSA and the Honors office have completely transformed my time at college and helped me develop concrete ideas for my future career. My application process for the NOAA Hollings Scholarship (2019) and the Udall Scholarship (2020) made me explore my career passion for watershed health and remediation and think critically and realistically about how I could achieve it.

Thank you so much to Dr. Costello, Dr. Zeng, and especially Jolynn for your amazing support!!!!

Love and appreciate all of you,
Anna Feldman
