They decided to start with North Africa first which housed many German troops known as the Afrika Korps. They soon captured back France and began to move inland. By 1945 they had almost arrived to Germany. As they moved towards Germany, they found many horrible, harsh concentration camps where they found many Jews and other groups were being tortured and killed. This period soon became known as the Holocaust. In the spring of 1945, Hitler knew that he had lost the war and killed himself instead of an official surrender. During this time, the Japanese put together a new tactic using suicide bombing planes to take down US warships. The United States however was still able to gain victory over the island of Okinawa. After the death of Roosevelt, president Harry S. Truman decided to use the newly built atomic bombs to help gain victory of Japan. For japan, the allies put a governor in charge who went over and could override decisions in Japan. The United States however continued to allow the Japanese government continue to work. The allies also worked to reform Japan's constitution and the allies left occupation of Japan by 1952. The allies made many demands of the Axis powers after the end of WWII.
