Despite the fact that they were under the Crown they governed themselves for the most part. For example, the House of Burgesses, a literal legislative body within the colonies governing a colony outside of any British enforcement. They ruled over themselves while the English were worried about their own problems at home until they began exploiting the colonies for their profits. Another example of their self rule was the entirety of Salutary Neglect. They traded with other countries under the table by their own means and prospered on their own without the guidance of the crown. They paid British authorities to not even care about them at all, and they grew and grew. Even when acts like the Iron act, Molasses act, and Wool act could not stop them from continuing to look for ways to avoid these English policies.
