The Children's Internet Protection Act is one of a number of bills that the United States Congress proposed to limit children's exposure to explicit content. I would only use sources that are 100% protected and accepted by my school district. This can affect teachers and their instruction because it limits the sources they can incorporate into their lessons. The main federal statute guiding student data privacy is FERPA, which stands for family educational rights and privacy act. “It requires that schools protect the privacy of education records and give parents access to them." The FERPA determines what information the school can collect and know. This law specifically applies to school and library computers. CIPA places certain restrictions on funding usage to protect children from viewing mature, harmful, or inappropriate material. In order to receive funding and discounts, schools and libraries are required to implement an internet safety policy that monitors (but does not track) minors’ online activity. Certification of CIPA compliance is required of schools and libraries in order to receive funding. This affects teachers and their instruction because an important aspect of online lesson planning is finding websites and resources that are allowed to be used by children in schools and libraries. I would use websites such as Padlet, Quizlet, and Pear Deck because they are easy to use and do not violate privacy laws. CIPA relates to the idea of book banning in school libraries because of censorship. With specific parameters in place, schools are able to keep topics out of children’s reach, possibly aiding in the banning of books. As a future educator, I feel that the some of the topics that schools choose to censor are important and need to be discussed in the classroom.
