He does this by expressing what Pi in feeling during his very intense situation. A character trait of Pi’s that helps exaplin the theme of survival is being resourceful. This quote shows that he had a can of water but no can opener. So he decided to be resourceful and find another way to open it (which he successfully did). Another way to prove this is, in the text it states “ I noticed a whistle hanging from one of the life jackets. Wouldn't this make a good whip with to keep him in line?” This quote shows that he was trying to find a successful way to tame Richard Parker  and was looking for things he could use in order  to not get eaten by the tiger. Martel conveys the theme of survival through character by putting Pi in difficult situations that he  is determined to conquer. For instance, "the hyena was plainly visible though. This quote shows that Pi had to be determined to get to where the necessities he needed, hyenas are vicious animals not anyone would try to get passed a hyena. For instance, In the beginning of the story it states "I have never known a worse physical hell than this putrid taste and pasty feeling in my mouth, this unbearable pressure at the back of the throat, this sensation that my blood was turning to a thick syrup that barely flowed. Truly, by comparison, a tiger was nothing". This quote shows that Pi was suffering. It was hard to stay alive in his circumstances, and he was close to giving up because he did not see any hope to get out of his situation. He felt hopeless in the beginning. He was alone and hungry while stranded at sea with an untamed tiger named Richard Parker. There was danger lurking all around him. However, later in the excerpt Pi starts to finally take stock of the lifeboat. In the passage it states "You might think I lost all hope at that point. I did. And as a result I perked up and felt much better. We see that in sports all the time, don't we? The tennis challenger starts strong but soon loses confidence in his playing. The champion racks up the games. But in the final set, when the challenger has nothing left to lose, he becomes relaxed again, insouciant, daring. Suddenly he's playing like the devil and the champion must work hard to get those last points. So it was with me". This quote means that after all the bad conditions that Pi was in, usually he would be unmotivated to continue on. But instead, it did the exact opposite. The bad things happening to him made him feel inspired to get through this challenge and survive. He got up and looked through Richard Parker's "den" and found important resources and is ready to find a way out of this problem. The main character in “Life of Pi” is Pi. He is a boy who got lost in the middle of Pacific Ocean alone. Pi used a survival strategy - mentally trick himself in order to survive. One of his traits is intelligent. In the text it states “I was no longer afraid of it… To be afraid of this ridiculous dog when there was a tiger about was like being afraid of splinters when trees are falling down”. This shows that creating this analogy helps him to priorities the conflict. In the beginning of the  story, Pi was afraid of the Richard Parker, he saw him as a big and scary tiger, and towards the end he was no longer afraid of him. His another trait is resourceful. In the text it states “I had to have water. I brought my hand down and quietly undid the hasp. I pulled on the lid. It opened onto a locker…” this shows that he is having the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties. “I looked at Richard Parker. My panic was gone. My fear was dominate. That was clever of him because when he didn’t find the tool he needed to open the can, he used the objects around him as tools, that is being resourceful. Another quote from the story is, “I counted the cartons of seven Ocean...That meant i had food rations to last me...93 days!
