His father was known for importing textiles while his mother, an avid painter. He also had a brother named Frank who became a physicist later in life. 

Oppenheimer Studied at Harvard, eventually earning his bachelors degree in physics. He then went to europe to study at cambridge and then onto the University Of Gottingen for his PHD in philosophy.

Oppenheimer began his research as a professor at Caltech, later going on to teach and research at many institutions. Including but not limited to UC Berkley, Harvard, Cambridge, University Of Chicago and most famously the Los Alamos test site.

Most famously scientist Albert Einstein founded the theory on atoms. This theory set the stage for scientists to understand the ways that our world is made up. Einstein proved that these miniscule particles make up our world.

Prior to his work on the Manhattan project  oppenheimer worked closely with atomic relativity and astronomy. He established many calculations explaining phenomena within our solar system. He worked to understand the way that the sun's rays worked. And many of his theories were later proved to be correct with the dawn of new technology. Starting as early as the late 1930s oppenheimer was found working closely with astrophysics and trying to understand the ways that things move about in our solar system. 

Most famously Oppenheimer was called up to a lead role on the Manhattan project. The goal of the project was to successfully develop an atom bomb. This was of course in an effort to end World War 2 in a decisive victory for the united states. 

Oppenheimer was tasked with leading the project and assembling a team of the best Physicists in America. He selected a rural private location in the middle of the New Mexico desert to build the famous test site dubbed "Los Alamos."

Here, Oppenheimer and his team, worked day in and day out to breakthrough the final barrier and split the atom. Doing so would release an unfathomable amount of force and lead us into a new age of weapons technology. 

On July 16th 1945 Oppenheimer and the team at Los Alamos were successful. The idea that humans could harness the force of atoms was revolutionary.

This began a dark age known as the cold war. Scientists across the world raced to institutions to try to discover the next big boom. Different bombs were tested and countries began to stockpile. At the peak of this age there were enough nuclear weapons in existance to destroy planet earth ten times over.

This new concept, known as "Mutually Assured Destruction" (MAD) ensured that any nation who tried to use nuclear weapons against another nuclear nation, would surely cause the destruction of the entire world.

In a more positive light, the dawn of nuclear power took humans in a more productive direction. The power of radioactive elements, like the ones used in the early nuclear bombs was understood to generate new levels of energy. This was a healthier alternative to the smoke creating carbon burning fossil fuels that humans had used for decades before. 

All of a sudden nuclear power plants were popping up all over the place. While the technology was not the same as the original atomic bomb. The advancements in atomic theory and new understandings in the way atoms worked.
