Ways to incorporate multicultural perspectives in an English class

In English class teachers can use books from various authors of diverse cultures. Authors from different cultures may have different writing styles and stories which students of the same culture may be able to relate to, and students of a different culture may be interested in learning more about a certain culture based on a story from a particular author. Sharing different perspectives can be affirming for students whose lives or culture is not usually reflected in the classroom (Thornton., 2018). Examples of multiculture literature are: ‘A Cow Called Boy’ by C. Everard Palmer, ‘El Pirata Garrapata’ by Juan Munoz martin and ‘My Name is Yoon’ by Helen Recorvits

It is important for teachers to learn about their students; teachers should encourage discussions where students share their cultures and stories (Canavan., 2022). When introducing new units' teachers can use the stories shared by students to make a connection to the lesson. For example, if there was prior discussion on foods, games or art that students relate to these can be used to create math word problems for students to solve. Although the math concept may be new to the student they will be interested and feel a connection because something they can relate to is included.

In a classroom with diverse learners' multiple languages may be spoken because students can be English learners. Teachers should encourage students to use their first language and translations as well. This will not only help with language acquisition, but students will feel a sense of acceptance when allowed to use their first language. When labelling items around the classroom Teachers can also make labels in various languages for example if there are students who speak Spanish or French; then classroom items could be labelled in English, Spanish and French. This utilizes students cultural background through teaching and learning as language is an important component of culture.

Getting to know students allows teachers to get an idea of students' prior knowledge which can be used to help students in the learning process. Students can be encouraged to share their traditions or prior knowledge that can help them to understand the content being presented to them. For example in a food and nutrition class where the topic is protein; students can be given an assignment where they are required to write recipes from their cultural background, This will be a teaching and learning moment for all the students because they will be sharing a recipe from their culture with their peers while they will be learning about a recipe for the same protein from a different culture. This ensures that all students' cultures are represented.

Knowing the students in the class allows teachers to tailor instructions to meet the individual needs of all students. Teachers can educate themselves on the diverse cultures of the students within the classroom (Understood., n.d). Sometimes they may need to converse with other teachers who may have a better relationship with the student and may be able to offer some insight. Teachers can then use this information to create assignments that gain the student's interest that are related t their culture.

These strategies can help teachers to adopt teaching styles which works best for their students; when teachers observe students, they can determine which teaching students works best for students as some students need scaffolding while others may require direct instruction. It is also important to remember that some students are visual learners, auditory learners or kinesthetic learners.

It is important for educators to remember that the students in their classroom come from various cultures where the norm will vary ( Moskovitz., 2025). What is acceptable in one culture may not be accepted in the other.

One way to create a classroom that respects diverse cultures is to have set rules and discuss the importance of these rules with students. These rules should also be displayed in the classroom to serve as a reminder to students. These rules should include clear expectations of everyone at all times and should include respect. Although cultures vary students and staff should be expected to show respect at all times to each other. Teachers should strive to create an environment where all students feel safe, accepted and respected.
