Igneous rocks come from lava or magma that has been cooled down. Magma that has been cooled down and became rocks are called intrusive rocks, as to how rocks that cooled down from lava are extrusive. Some examples of igneous rocks include obsidian, granite, and basalt.

This sediment can contain minerals, small plant parts and other organic matter. Over a long period of time, the sediment is condensed before consolidating into solid rock layers.

Metamorphic rocks form deep within the Earth when either igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, or other metamorphic rocks are exposed to heat and pressure. Uplifting and erosion help bring metamorphic rocks to the surface of the Earth. Rocks that have a branded or layered appearance to them are considered foliated, as opposed to rocks that do not have that appearance, which are nonfoilated. Some metamorphic rock examples include sandstone, shale, and limestone.
