Ally didn't know that it was a sympathy card since she couldn't read. Because of this, she was sent to the office. The sub, Mr Daniels, helps Ally out significantly once he figures out that she has dyslexia by not making her write very often until she learns how to read. He also stays after school with Ally to give her lessons and they start their own little chess club. Later on in the book Ally becomes friends with Keisha and Albert who also could be considered outcasts. The three of them bring out the best in one another by always helping each other out. Ally's confidence grows and she is able to stand up against her bully, Shay. Towards the end of the book, Shay and Ally both run for class president. Ally ends up winning which makes Shay angry. Albert: Albert is also one of Ally's friends. He is picked on and beaten up quite a bit. He is very smart and also helps Ally.

Mr Daniels: Mr Daniels is subbing for Mrs.Hall (Ally's homeroom teacher). I would give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars. I liked the book but I think it was a little bit too young for me.
