Parable- The Sower

Mt: 13, Mk: 4, Lk: 8

The Sower parable is about a Sower who went out to sow his field. The sower tossed the seeds, and they all fell in different places. Some fell on the path, promptly eaten by birds. Some fell on the rocks and took root. However, when the sun came, their shallow roots withered in the sun. Some fell on the thorns, immediately choked out before they had a chance to take root. The other seeds fell on fresh soil and took root. These are the seeds that eventually became strong plants and grew plentifully.

I think that this passage is analogical, comparing god's word to the seeds that the sower was planting. The seeds are god's word, and the areas that they landed on represent the different types of people, and how they received god's word.

In the beginning, the sowers seeds fall on the path and are eaten by birds. This refers to the people who hear god's word but are corrupted quickly before they have a chance to take root anywhere, before they can truly appreciate god's word. The second example is when the seeds fall on the rocks, take root, but the roots don't go deep enough, and the plants eventually wither. This represents the people who hear god's word and understand it, but they get distracted and stray when things get rough. Some seeds fell on thorns, representing the people who didn't believe god's word, thus they were quickly choked out. Then Jesus concludes the parable with a final example - the seeds that fell on the fresh soil. This represents those who hear god's word and are nourished, those who benefit from god's word.

I think the modern teaching value is to be the good soil, to keep god's word and let it be the fertilizer for your metaphorical garden.
