Most Violated Commandment by Students

I believe Commandment Eight, "Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output" is the most commonly violated by students. Plagiarism is clearly a problem for secondary and higher education because all schools need to have plagiarism checks for papers to ensure that the student didn't steal work from another person. A big paper can be daunting, so the combination of fear, laziness, and procrastination can lead to the last-second scramble to submit some form of work. I think this is often how this commandment gets broken by students.

I think that Commandment Ten, "Thou shalt always use a computer in ways that ensure consideration and respect for your fellow humans," is most commonly violated by students and non-students alike. There is a lot of disrespect that occurs through the use of technology because it is easy to do from behind a screen. There is safety in not having to be face-to-face with someone while still being able to tear someone down. This kind of disrespectful behavior can be in the form of cyberbullying, piracy, hacking, fraudulent behavior, impersonations, and more.

Eliminating Unethical Behavior

It is nearly impossible to address all unethical computer behavior, but certain actions can be taken to address Commandments Eight and Ten.
Commandment Eight can be addressed with a thorough plagiarism checker and clear, written punishment for plagiarizing. If students understand that they will surely be caught and their actions will have consequences, they are more likely to take the necessary steps to avoid punishment. When teachers are ignorant of technology or simply don't care, students will take advantage of the opportunity to cheat for a better grade with less work.
Commandment Ten can be addressed by the online community of people with strict netiquette standards. Most often, punishment from peers can be more impactful than punishment from law enforcement or other institutions. Many people on the internet are vigilant of disrespectful or criminal behavior and take their own action to address it. If nothing else, someone will alert law enforcement so that they can review the situation.
