The silence stretches on, after the initial staggering and curse words from everybody around, for with the crash came a tremendous jolt. I chance a glance at the clock on the wall and see it says 11:49 pm, the second hand ticking just below the 4 mark. There is such a silence, except of course for the constant moving of the machines, that had they not been there, we would have heard the ice falling on the deck 4 floors above. The second hand is creeping ever so close to the 11:50 pm mark and right before it ticks 11:50, I get a bad feeling, … and my life flashes before my eyes.

My wife and son, boarding the Olympic to America, me boarding this ship, our son being born, meeting my wife, my childhood, my parents, who always believed that I would be apart of something important, and even my dog, Charlie, who we had to sell to scrounge up the money to sail to America, and how I miss him, how I miss my family…

Then the water crashes in. It's so sudden, so shocking, that I almost forget to grab onto something as the water sweeps through, as to not get tossed. I grab the handle of a coal door and hold on as the icy water comes through. It's so cold, it feels like it is burning me, but I hold on to the coal door. I realize, that the watertight doors are starting to close and I shout through the soaked room,

"GET TO THE WATERTIGHT DOORS! THEY ARE OUR ONLY WAY OUT!"

The door is about a quarter of the way closed when I have slowly marched my way through the water over to it, and push the first person through. My heart leaps as I think that possibly everyone will be able to get through. Luckily, the doors close relatively slowly, so I have enough time to push 3 more people through before it gets to about 2/3 closed. The last people have hiked their way through the flood, which is rising at every second, and are at the door. Two people crawl under at the same time, leaving me, Hopscotch, another boiler room worker, and the telegraph receiver. The feeling of terror that I feel inside of me is mirrored on all of their faces, but the telegraph receiver summons some dignity and says

	"Who should go?"

"There is no time to be polite, get out of the door!" I yell at him.

He looks slightly offended but crawls through the remaining 2 feet of door space. As he goes through, and the unfamiliar boiler worker starts crawling in behind him, I look at the clock on the wall. 12: 25 am flashes through my head and the clock suddenly becomes my life. I only have a short amount of time, and it's ticking away a little too quickly for my liking. It's only about 12:00, but I realize that I am not going to make it. I mean, logically, there is still a good foot in a quarter to climb through, and if my hunch was correct, 25 minutes, but something inside of me knows that even if I do get through that door, I will not survive. Why waste the life of a person who won't survive, when you can save someone who just might?

"Michael. Go," I say in a steady voice.

"No, ain't leaving you! You go!" He sounds like a wounded animal, but I push on.

"The door is getting smaller, you need to go through!" I give him a forceful shove.

"You go through, or we both die because I am not going through!"

"Michael... Do you have a family in America?" He hesitates, then says

"Three daughters. My wife died five years ago."

"You see? You are more important. My wife is still alive, and she can take care of our son, even though it will be extremely hard. You, though? Your kids need you. They might even die without you. You must go. "

He looks at the door, only about 8 inches remaining, just enough for him to squeeze through.

"Better only one of us didn't make it," I try to keep my voice steady, for Michael's sake, but it cracks a little.

This seems to push him across the line. He looks at the door and dives for it, saying as he goes through

"I will never forget you, Freddy!"

Up in the crow’s nest, you could see for miles and miles. I looked back to the ship and saw all the people walking around, talking, eating. I smiled. I looked back at the bow and suddenly saw a great, large mass coming up. It was dark. I could barely see the outline of it among the stars. I rang the large bell beside me. Another crewmate on the ground looked up at me. “Iceberg, right ahead!” I yelled down at him.

He looked up at me, instantly understanding. He started to run to the stairs climb up them, and sprint into the bridge. I looked back at the looming structure of ice. We were getting closer and closer by the second. I turned to the other lookout next to me, Reginald Lee.

“Why aren’t they turning?” I asked him in a scared voice. “I don’t know, Frederick.” He answered.

I looked back at the huge iceberg. We were only a few yards away now. I closed my eyes and braced for the impact, but it never came. I opened my eyes and saw that we had just missed the edge, turning hard-a-port.

“Ha! That was very clo-”

I suddenly heard a horrible scraping sound, like nails on a chalkboard. I fell back onto the floor and grabbed the railings. Reginald almost toppled right off of the crow’s nest. After a few seconds, the shaking and noise stopped.

“What was that?” Reginald almost screamed.

“I think that we hit the berg...” I said. He looked at me with a worried expression. “But don’t worry. This ship is called unsinkable after all.” His expression slowly changed from worried to relieved.

“Oh yes, we will be fine.” He replied. We both chuckled for a moment and got back up. I looked down at the deck.

A chunk of ice had fallen off of the great iceberg, and a few young men were kicking it around. I looked at the iceberg and saw that we were smoothly gliding past us. I knew something was going to happen. And so, we waited for more information on the damage.

Only a half-hour later, people were rushing up onto the main deck in panic. Everyone was wearing life jackets, obviously anticipating the inevitable. I climbed down out of the crow’s nest and onto the main deck.

“Frederick! Reginald! Get over here!” It was 2nd officer Charles Lightoller. We both ran over to him, struggling through the crowd. He was in front of Lifeboat 6. “Get in here!” He ordered. We did not hesitate to follow his orders. We clambered in and waited for our boat to be lowered.

A few seconds later, the lifeboat was full of frightened people. Two men walked up to the ropes on either side of the lifeboat and began lowering them. It took a long time, about 20 minutes. But after we were in the water, there was no turning back. We paddled the lifeboat as far away from the ship as we could get it, and then we stopped. A woman in the row behind me, Margaret Brown, was making quite a fuss.

“We need to go back to help the others!” I looked back at her.

“We can’t. There are too many desperate people, and they will swamp the boat.” We argued for a few minutes, then she gave up. I looked back at the magnificent, sinking ship. The bow was tilting noticeably downwards now, and almost all the lifeboats on the front of the ship had been launched. We could do nothing but watch as the people frantically raced to the stern of the ship, hoping to board a lifeboat there. The ship was tilting very much now, and the bridge must have been underwater.

The others in the lifeboat were whispering prayers, hoping that their families were on a different lifeboat and that they would see them again. I suddenly heard a horrible noise, like a twister ripping apart buildings. I looked back at the ship and saw that the center was straining terribly hard. It wasn't made for stress like this. Then a huge crack and the ship broke into two. I could hear the people screaming through the cold air as the front half of the ship went completely submerged. The remaining people still on the ship were now even more frantic to get to the stern.

“Oh no...” I heard from multiple people behind me. I was horrified that a ship deemed unsinkable could cause so much grief. Then, the back half of the ship began to tilt up, up, up, until it was almost vertical. People were holding on to railings and falling 50 feet. Some people had managed to climb up onto the stern of the ship, where the propellers were. Then, the ship began to fall down, down, into the foaming, freezing cold water beneath. Some people jumped from where they were sitting, hoping that the impact wouldn’t kill them. When there was only the back end of the ship left, a current formed, pulling people down into the sea, like a whirlpool. Then, silently, the entire ship slipped under the smooth water, taking hundreds of lives with it.

It didn't seem to make contact with the ship, but I did notice that the engine has stopped working. I felt a curious stop the steady rhythm. Then someone yelled, "We're starting to sink!"The alarm went off and everyone was freaking out. "Alright See you later Hugh"

I was just walking out when Crash! Everything started to shake and fall over. It felt like it lasted for 10 minutes! Then everything came to a stop. I went outside and looked over, "Looks like we hit an Iceberg"

I went back into the smoking-room,

Everyone was asking

"what happened?"

I told them "Everyone calm down we just hit an iceberg, The unsinkable can definitely handle that."

"Alright thanks, Hugh."

After about 20 minutes a lot of people started coming up from the lower classes and asked one person, "whats going on?"

"Water's filling up the cabins and down below, The Unsinkable is sinking."

"Oh boy," I told myself

They quickly get dressed and see what everyone is freaking out at. John thinks he is looking straight, but he actually is looking up. That's when the gravity of the situation hits him. The iceberg did more damage than previously thought. They immediately went to the mechanical horses to get lifebelts. They each had one but found another, so John cut the lining so Madeleine could see what it was made of. But he still thought that they were safer on the ship than those puny, tiny lifeboats.

As he started to spread the butter on the rolls, the iceberg hit the ship, The crashing objects falling down, the walls smashing down to the floor, Walter's shock was out of the roof. He said the impact of the Iceberg caused the rolls he had made to slip out of his hands, and fall to the ground. Every spice, ingredient, plates and utensils fell into the rushing water that started streaming in through the cracks and holes in the wall. He started to rush his way out of the kitchen, and up to the top deck of the titanic. He started to question if he would be able to make it out alive, Walter was scared.

The water was getting higher, and he could feel objects in the water hitting him on the leg, he could smell the oceans saltiness around him, he could see tables, broken chair legs, and some people struggling to go up the stair case that was almost under the water.

"Help!" Walter heard multiple people yell. He needed to worry about himself right now.

Eventually, he got up the staircase, and the room was not underwater, so he ran, and ran, until he got to the last floor before the top deck, behind him, more water was coming, so he sped up to the top deck. It was filled with people running and screaming, women and kids were getting into lifeboats. Walter waited and waited until there were no lifeboats left. Tons and tons of people were still on deck, not in a lifeboat. Walter was finding ways to get off the titanic for hours when the titanic split in half. There was no time, Walter jumped off deck from thirty feet into the cold salty waters.

Out of the mist, a shape started to take form, it was an iceberg! Then I grabbed the nest's telephone and screamed at an officer named James Moody who was in the bridge "iceberg right ahead!" the ship turned left accordingly. Then three minutes later I heard the most horrifying scraping noise, at that moment I knew exactly what had happened.

The iceberg had scraped across the hull, tearing a hole in her side, chunks of ice were scattered across the deck, people were getting out of their cabins to see what had happened. About 20 minutes later I heard that the ship had been taking in water and the boiler room was almost submerged. That's when the hairs on my arm stood on end and I got the worst sense of panic I ever had.

By now the crew was starting to let 1st class women and children onto the lifeboats. People were running and screaming. I was ordered to board and lower lifeboat 6. t took 30 minutes to get the boat loaded and lowered, those were the worst thirty minutes of my life. Quartermaster Robert Hichens and I were in charge of the boat. People were begging to get on the boat, but only a select few could board. One lady was forced to board.

When the boat was halfway down from the ship to the water, the passengers said they wanted more oarsmen to paddle. So Hichens called for anyone with sailing experience to board the lifeboat. A Canadian Colonel Arthur Peuchen volunteered and shimmed from the ship down to the lifeboat on the ropes. Finally, the lifeboat hit the water. as we were paddling away from the wreck, the stern of the ship was now at a 90-degree angle. Now the ship was going into the water at a faster pace. One passenger wanted to go back and save some people, but I knew if we went back the lifeboat would not be able to hold everyone.

In the distance, I started to see some lights so I told everyone to paddle towards them.

He heard a scream, he could just make out the words and they said, "ICEBERG RIGHT AHEAD." Crew members began to scramble, passengers stood there confused, wondering what had happened. Then Captain Smith walked in.

"What hit, I heard screams," he asked.

"An iceberg sir," Officer Murdoch replied," The speed was too fast, the iceberg scraped the side, the ship will eventually sink."

"Ready the lifeboats." Ordered Captain Smith.

"Yes sir," Officer Murdoch replied," But sir, we won't have enough for everyone to board."

"It's ok," Captain Smith replied," Ready them for now."

George rushed down from the docking bridge to help calm everyone, he ordered crew mates to wake people in the cabins, as water began to fill the ship, people began to board the lifeboats.

This is when I knew something was wrong with the ship. We got out life vests on and headed towards the boat deck. I felt the ship slightly sink forward. Once we got on the deck I heard someone shout,

"Women and children on the lifeboats first!"

The people around us were crying and yelling not wanting to leave their families. I felt the ship sink forward even more. Life boats one and two started to lower into the water half full. The sixth life boat was not even halfway full and I heard a woman ask.

"Why are you lowering the life boats halfway full?" She was stand near the crew.

"Because we do not have enough time to get the boats full," the man replied.

Life boats seven through twelve were already in the water moving out when I felt a crew member grab my arm and pull me towards boat thirteen. I grabbed my husband and son and pulled them with me although Alden, my son, got tossed into the stern of the boat. My husband stepped into the bow with me and we grabbed our son. We hit the water and started to row away from the ship. I was looking at the ship and saw it sink more into the cold ocean, and I saw people starting to jump from the ship. As people were jumping I though of how stupid it was to not fill the lifeboats fully. The ship started to crack and everyone turned to look. I gasped as the other half of the ship fell to the surface of the water creating waves making one of the lifeboats flip.

Calling fellow crew members Ring "iceberg tell the captain!" Fleet yelled. The sailor turning to the left as fast as he could as the crew members send a signal to the boiler room to go at fast as they can. but the boat just kept going straight "come on" fredrick said anxiously. Then at the last second, it turns! But the iceberg scraped against the side of the ship. Then as quick as light the boat started to fill up with water starting with the boiler room.

Everyone was rushing in onto deck C. My buddy and I decided to go help people stuck in lower cabins. We descended down the steps and found some people sleeping and woke them up. I say we saved about 15 lives, but now it's time to save ours. We headed up and saw some lifeboats in the water already, which was good. But then I saw an old man waving to a girl in the lifeboat, and saying,

"I'll be fine don't worry about me"

Then I said, "There looks like room for you there, Hop in!"

He then said,

"No, women and children first, a child or women should survive over me"

Then the women In the lifeboat said

"No! If you're not coming in then I'm not going"

I decided to stay out of their conversation and go somewere else. I helped the crew lower lifeboats and more. But now it was my wife and I's turn to get in. It was pretty rough going down and the titanic was sinking every minute. Then we were finally in the water and rowing away.
