How can quality use of research be part of powerful and sustained improvement processes and cultures within and across schools?

- Blake - social nature of research use - if we want improvement - we need to link into social nature of research use
- Blake - culture is v important to encourage research use - but how do you build a culture of research use?
- Steve - without research, talk is only at surface level, change is ungrounded, discussion shallow, change based on instinct or power
- Steve - seen as the "research guy" in his school, people in his school are looking for a "single" paper/answer
- Steve - sees Q as taking a long "tail" approach/support to research improvement in schools
- Rach - there is a need for emotional intelligence with regard to research use; people resistant to things that they don't know or agree with; if research doesn't agree, they question the evidence and the use of it
- Rach - how do I live with my own real experience vs research - where there may be contradiction. Where is the middle ground between people's perspective vs research; subjective vs objective
- Rach - that's the culture - can I be right and wrong at the same time? This is what needs to be solved/addressed in terms of culture
- Sandra - research more right than my own experience/thoughts? People need help balancing this
- Sandra - we go hunting for solutions; instant answer; research doesn't necessarily speak to this - research may give more questions, different perspectives
- Blake - practitioners looking for research to do something that it is not necessarily set up to do
- Rach - research needs to be multi-directional - rather than uni-directional; experience counts. Culture is about research being bi-directional - but how do you do this beyond Q? Over time? Research is an evolution rather than a point in time
- Sandra - as you are trying something out - inquiry mindset - thoughtful engagement is being intentional about why you are using certain research and trialling for what reason
- Rach - if you are engaged in research - it is about ownership and championship
- Rach - best way forward is for teachers to champion research to other teachers - that is culture change from within
- Sandra - examples in Queensland - relationships btw researchers with teachers - engaging with each other to use research
