This was created for a 6 year old African American boy in the 2nd Grade. His name is Garrett and he loves playing sports outside and Science. He loves to read and enjoys hearing new stories. Tyler has progressed well in reading for his age and is reading at a 3rd grade level. These are the books I selected for his book box.

I picked Building A Dream by Darshana Khiana because he loves sports and this book talks about Soccer so he will be engaged in the story. I think that this book will be a window as the characters are diverse. This book is for a grade 3-5 reading level which is perfect since he is at a grade 3 level. It is however a longer book so it will take longer to read.

I picked Let Them Play by Margot Theis Raven because it has a good storyline and the main character is the same race as Garrett so in that way it can be a mirror. This book is also about playing baseball and being a team which is something he enjoys and it sends a good message to young readers. This book is a shorter read and at a grade 2-4 reading level so it will be an easier read.

I picked Dream Big by Ricky Sapp because it's a really inspiring story and teaches young readers that they can do anything they put their minds to. The main character is also an African American boy so in that sense it can be a mirror for Garrett. This book also relates to Football so he will be interested in the material. There is only 26 pages so it will be a lighter read and perfect for his age group and abilities.

I picked A Drop Around The World by Barbara Shaw McKinney because it tells a cool story about a drop of water on it's journey through the water cycle. Garrett loves Science so this book will interest him. There aren't any windows or mirrors in this book, but he will still learn from it as it is educational. This book is for the Kindergarten-6 reading level so he will be able to read it easily.

I picked Look Up With Me by Jennifer Berne because it is an outstanding Science trade book for students. This book talks about astronomy, something that Garrett is interested in. This book can be a mirror because the main character shares the same culture as Garrett. This is a heavier read but managable for him as it is at a Preschool-3 reading level.

I picked How I Grow by Natalie Anne because it is educational but also a fun lighthearted read. It talks about the plants life cycle. This is related to Science so Garrett will enjoy reading it. There are no windows or mirrors within this book but has many illustrations to keep him engaged. This book is a short read and at a Preschool-7 reading level so Garrett will be able to read this book easily independently.
