Retired Educator and Family Historian, Elizabeth Kaldeck Smith by Elizabeth Kaldeck Smith https://padlet.com/elizabethkaldecksmith/about Biography # 6 Elizabeth Kaldeck Smith, Retired Educator and Family Historian Elizabeth Kaldeck Smith entered the field of teaching in the late 1960’s. She worked as a learning disabilities specialist before Massachusetts passed chapter 766 in 1972. This landmark legislation for students with disabilities was used as a model for the federal law which followed several years later. Elizabeth has been a special needs teacher, team chairperson and elementary special education department head . She has worked in several Massachusetts towns, including Westford and Andover. After retirement in 2002, Elizabeth established Educational Advocacy Services, her own advocacy and consulting business. For Elizabeth his was a wonderful opportunity to work directly with parents and use her abilities to help achieve mutually agreed upon solutions for special needs students. Elizabeth continued her advocacy business until 2008. During retirement, Elizabeth sang in a chamber choir, an acapella group and as a soloist both in classical music and jazz performances. She studied both jazz vocal and jazz piano for the first time in her life Listening to her favorite musical groups is a daily ritual. Being a family historian is an ongoing project for Elizabeth. She does genealogical research to help her in this pursuit and is a student of European history with a special focus on events of WWII. She is writing a detailed account of the history of her family. Elizabeth Kaldeck Smith has a BA from Brandeis University and an M. Ed. Shayla to the Rescue

Shayla (Standard Poodle Extraordinaire), who I introduced to Medium readers back in July, wasn’t socialized with other dogs while growing up. She was always the only dog in the house. The times she encountered other dogs were at the groomer or when our next door neighbor’s dog wandered into our yard and pooped in our garage or went into her yard. This dog, a tiny Pomeranian named Rusty, was unleashed in a town which requires leashes for dogs.

The desire for musicians to make music and for audiences to hear it has only intensified in spite of all the pandemic –related problems. This has led to the creative solutions musical groups have taken to keep practicing and performing. Singers as well as brass and woodwind players can spread the virus more easily than other musicians. So, to reduce the spread of Covid 19, brass and woodwind players have special masks with an opening for their mouths so they can play their instruments. There are cotton coverings for the bell of their instruments to capture droplets. Amazon and the Broadway Relief Project carry larger masks specially made for singers.
