Formative assessments take place through out a learning unit, they can be informal (not graded) such as an in class discussion or a short graded quiz in the middle of a unit. Summative assessments are given at the end of a unit and typically encompass all the unit topics, this could be an exam, a project, or a paper. Both are used to assess student learning.
