Working with adolescents, I utilise a variety of mediums for developing my client's strengths. Visual cues such as strength cards or drawing can be useful alongside discussions in which the young person uses their own language to identify what they feel they are good at. I endeavour to then incorporate the identified strengths in each session, highlighting examples of when they have used a strength they didn't think they were good at and getting them to identify examples of when they have used strengths they feel they are good at within the past day/week. I make sure to write these examples down to either simply remind the young person of in future sessions or to print out for a visual reminder when they are struggling to remember their strengths.

I try to keep the communication focused on the issues. I allow the person time to explain the situation and I also listen carefully to fully understand the issues. I use eye contact only if it isn't too confronting for the person (Indigenous people don't respond well to direct eye contact). I keep the communication as comfortable as possible for the person. I use empathy and comfort measures as appropriate and I try to support them as much as possible. I will often do drawings and show pictures to enable better understanding of our communications.
