Valuable resources were being drained from the ground, to be used for machinery, and it was damaging Earth. Also, mining companies were playing a huge part. They were being very wasteful with the materials being pulled out of the ground. Above ground, land speculators and developers were taking over large amounts of forest for grazing. This means they were destroying forests where many wild animals lived so that they could grow their cattle, where they would eventually kill to either sell or eat the meat and body parts.

We are overusing valuable fossil fuels and destroying the O-zone layer, which keeps our Earth from heating up from the Sun's rays. Without an O-zone layer, there is nothing stopping Earth from overheating. Also, there are tons of plastic in our oceans, killing fish and ocean wildlife. At the same time, we are cutting down trees and parts of forests faster than ever, much faster than they can regrow.

Both times, these people were/are trying to completely put an end to pollution, or at least lessen it so that Earth isn't being affected as much. They also were both trying to advocate for conservation. However, this is a very hard challenge, because the world depends so much on fossil fuels and plastics, that it is very difficult to make a dent in the amount of harmful materials we use. We rely on these things to work and live a "normal" life.
