Look Both Ways is an amazing book by Jason Reynolds. This book is made up of multiple stories. All these stories are about teenage kids who are in middle school going through struggles. No matter your circumstance or what your going through, your real friends will always be there for you.

Theme Exploration

Friendship is developed in the story "The Low Cuts Strike Again" by the group of Low Cuts. They all had to form there friendship somehow and find out about each others struggles. Yet, they still have there friendship and hang out with each other all the time. Their relationship evolved with each other when they were all walking around after school. They are all so passionate about what they are doing. While also connecting as a group on their mission. Jason Reynolds writes ""Everybody ready?" Bit asked, one foot on the bench, huddling everyone up." (25). This quote is an example of them being excited about there mission, while also working together to accomplished their goal. Also from the story "Water Booger Bears" their relationship evolved on their walk home. That is because this is when they came up with the nickname, Water Booger Bears. Which is special to them and shows how special their friendship is. Jason Reynolds writes ""Ah, water booger bears." Jasmine perked up. nodded. "I like that."" (14). This quote is from when they figured out there nickname, water booger bears. This is a special moment because they are probably going to call each other that for a long time.

Character Analysis

In the story "Water Booger Bears" TJ and Jasmine's friendship is very strong and loving. Throughout the story we learn that Jasmine has a blood disease. Still though TJ sticks with her and helps her. He is her motivation. TJ is always so nice to her and loves her for who she is. Jason Reynolds writes "TJ said, holding the door for Jasmine as they finally made it out of the building." (7). This quote is showing that TJ does such simple things for Jasmine, such as opening the door for her. Yet these things are so loving and it shows he is always there for her.

Literary Devices and Structure

In the story "Water Booger Bears" Jasmine and TJ have "friendship flags" which they call "the litter of love". They were notes showing affection towards each other. These symbolized there strong friendship and how much they cared about each other. For example Jasmine wrote one for TJ that said "I missed you" in cheeto dust, because Jasmine was gone for a couple of days. This is showing that just because Jasmine was gone from school for a bit, that didn't stop them from caring about each other, and it may have made their friendship stronger. Jason Reynolds writes "Littered with empty snack bags that Jasmine had slid through the door vent between classes over the last two days. Trash... yes. But Jasmine and TJ called them "friendship flags" "(3). This quote is an example of their friendship flags. As you can see they just leave small little notes around for each other to find, that are so meaningful and special to them.

Personal Reflection and Conclusion

In conclusion I think these books demonstrate seeing different perspectives on things and seeing the good in people. The book Look Both Ways relates to our world today, by showing good friendships and how loving and kind people are. It also relates to our world by showing peoples insecurities and how they overcome them. This book relates to my own life by showing how you don't need a lot of money or friends to be happy in life. It is better when it comes to friends to find the real ones and the ones that are going to be there for you in the long run. No matter your circumstance or what your going through, your real friends will always be there for you.
