Researchers from the Marine Biological Station gave us a presentation on the impact of climate change on the sea and challenged us with the question: 'We all love the sea, but do we care enough?".

In Izola, we visited InnoRenew CoE, a research institute dedicated to renewable materials and healthy living environments. They showed us their innovative approach to wood and its use. InnoRenew CoE sees solutions to the climate crisis in the science of buildings and materials, but many challenges remain: taking sustainability into account in the construction, operation and use of buildings; optimising renewable materials; understanding human behaviour patterns within the built environment; improving the well-being of inhabitants and increasing social cohesion.

In Triglav National Park, a unique protected area in the Alpine world, we learned about its priority objectives. These are the conservation of ecosystems and natural processes, natural values, the diversity of habitat types, fauna and flora, and the quality and diversity of landscapes. In the inhabited parts of the National Park, the emphasis is on preserving the cultural heritage and the quality of the cultural landscape, which is the result of the coexistence of local people and nature. The economic and social conditions for the sustainable development of activities that enable and support the preservation of settlement, a quality living and working environment, a distinctive identity and the traditional use of natural resources are provided for local people, with the support of the relevant government departments.

Organic tourist farm "Pri Plajerju"

An example of the harmony between people and nature at the organic tourist farm "Pri Plajerju" in Trenta. The apartments use mainly natural materials to ensure well-being, with furniture made from solid spruce, larch, ash and maple wood. Blankets are made of wool and cotton, pillows are stuffed with wool and husks of various cereals. Slippers are also made of wool. But what they are most proud of is the food they offer, which is prepared simply and with all one’s heart. All waste water on the farm is treated in a plant-based wastewater treatment plant. This ensures that nature in Trenta and the Soča River remain clean and unspoilt.

Mag. Miha Pavšek from the Anton Melik Geographical Institute of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences gave a lecture on the problem of the shrinking Triglav glacier, which is a silent witness of global warming. The accelerated shrinkage of the glacier, which started in the second half of the 1980s, has intensified until the beginning of the 21st century. The accelerating thinning of the ice led to the appearance of individual rock bumps in the middle of the glacier, until the glacier broke into two separate parts in 1992. The process has stalled in the years with above-average snow cover in late spring, but only when snow accumulated evenly throughout the snow season.

We also visited the beekeeping museum in Radovljica and raised awareness among young people about the importance of bees for our common future. Pollination is responsible for a third of the world's food and bees play the most important role among pollinators. One in three spoonful’s of our food depends on bees. Bees are increasingly threatened by disease, intensive agriculture, pesticide use in agriculture and climate change. In Europe, almost 10% of all bees are threatened with extinction. We have also learned that honey is not only a sweetener, but also a medicine. The Slovenian Beekeepers' Federation, with the support of the Republic of Slovenia and the UN, has proposed that 20 May should become World Bee Day.

Excursion to the Škocjan Caves

By visiting the Škocjan Caves, we entered the underground world, a unique natural phenomenon created by the Rijeka river. The Škocjan Caves are the first monument in Slovenia and in the Classical Karst to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is the first underground wetland due to its important habitat, which contains highly specialised and often endemic species of terrestrial and aquatic cave animals - including the olm (Proteus anguinus).

Exploring Kavala, at the edge of old Town penisula, in Mehmet Ali (1769-1849) Square, native of Kavala, Pasha of Egypt. Under the bronze equestrian statue of Mehmet Ali on the square named after him, that was made in Paris by Konstantinos Dimitriadis (1881-1943), a sculptor and academic who had also been a champion in the Olympic Games. It was commissioned by the Greeks of Egypt as a gift to the city of Kavala, and unveiled by Prince Amr Ibrahim of Egypt on 6 December 1949.

Keep exploring Kavala, climbing Acropolis of Kavala, built around the first quarter of 15th century, stands at the top of Panagia peninsula where the old town is situated. It was built on the remains of the Byzantine Acropolis of Christoupolis (former name of Kavala) which was destroyed in 1391, incorporating parts that survived from it. The various fortification interventions are quite obvious and were carried out by Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans.

Under the Aqueduct of Kavala, popularly known as the Kamares, that is a well-preserved aqueduct in the city and is one of the city's landmarks. While the aqueduct is of Roman origin, the present structure built by the Ottomans in the 16th century. It consists of 60 arches of four different sizes, a lenght of 270 m and a maximum height of 52 m.

Last stop ... at the point that St Paul first stepped on European soil.
At the point a Synthesis of mosaic 35m2 is placed in the step of Apostle Paul in the city of Kavala next to Church Agios Nikolaos, with tittle "The arrival of the Apostle Paul in Neapolis of Philippi." Apostle Paul during his tour (49-50 AD) in Asia (second phase of apostolic tour) saw a vision of a Macedonian man stand and begs him: "Come over to Macedonia and help us" (Pr.16, 9). This vision was the reason to come and preach the Ap. Paul for Christ, the Resurrection and the Church in Europe. The

winter of 49 a.D St. Paul disembarked for the first time on European soil, in Naples. From Naples went to Philippi (via the old Egnatia Str.) which was then one of the major cities of Eastern Macedonia and Roman colony to declare his faith. At this point then allegedly became the landing of St. Paul has created a monument honoring the first steps in the city of Kavala.

Visiting the ruins of Philippi, the city of Alexander the Great, the museum, the theatre (UNESCO HERITAGE LIST) and Lydia Baptistery.
In July 2016 the archaeological site of Philippi was inscribed on the UNESCO register of world heritage sites. You can find further information on the criteria according to which the site was selected on UNESCO’s website.

6th and last day activities of LTT in Kavala, Greece, Saturday 12^th March 2022, visiting Cave of Alistrati with a very impressive, big variety of stalactites and stalagmites inside the cave mostly because of the difference of their shapes and their age.
The cave fascinates with its breathtaking variety of formations. According to mythology this is the cave through which Hades kidnapped Persephone, daughter of goddess Demetra, to the underworld. It is considered to be the most beautiful and most decorated cave in Greece and probably in Europe, where nature decided to demonstrate its power, in creating ornaments.

Giant screen, information followed live, regulation of flows in real time... it is here that the network of installations is coordinated which has protected Bordeaux, for almost 30 years, from any major flood.
It was in fact following the catastrophic storms and the rising waters of 1983 that the community invested heavily in a protection network. Right bank, reservoirs, penstock evacuation pipes to the Garonne, pumping stations. Left bank, huge collectors under the ring road, retention basins along the ring road and buried basins in town.
The pharaonic aspect of these installations is reflected in the surname given to the center which runs it: Ramses, for Regulation of sanitation by measures and supervision of equipments and stations.

Why destroy valuable goods that may be useful to others? How can waste materials contribute to generating a circular economy? What social innovations could be put into place to provide solutions? How can objects and materials that some people dispose of enhance other people’s lives?
Since 2010, the organisation has played an active role in the field of social innovation and ecological transition, by promoting the reuse of waste materials, objects and furniture, originating from individuals or companies.

Through the work of staff, designers in residence, volunteers of all ages and interns from all academic backgrounds, ATELIER D’éco SOLIDAIRE encourages creative thinking and a return to common sense.

It is a centre for recovery, a place for creative upcycling and resale as well as a hub for environmental education, allowing constraints to be turned into opportunities.The reuse centre actively participates in local job creation.

It helps revitalize craft trades. It promotes artistic and citizens’ projects, getting men and women to work together towards a positive and sustainable goal. ads006Centres like ours have been successfully developped all over France for their social and environemental utility.

The concept has found a unique twist here in Bordeaux : creative work through up cycling has allowed awareness to be raised about the benefits of giving unwanted goods a new lease of life and adopting smarter and more sustainable consumption habits among a wider target audience.

Arcachon Bay, the beauty of both land and sea, and a world unto itself... Arcachon Bay is like nowhere else – a sort of "Far West", with "black shores" and "Texan landscapes" according to Jean Cocteau. The horizons, family names, smells, and colours, as well as the fishing huts and their interiors have a disorienting exotic feel about them. They are often reminiscent of Africa and the Sahara, with its kilometres of dunes, or of former French colonies in the Pacific Ocean or the West Indies. However, nothing has been imported here. Everything is genuine, shaped by the wind and tides. This is where salt and fresh water meet, and the ecosystem features extremely varied soils and vegetation. People have adapted wonderfully to this generous environment, taking advantage of the wealth offered by the sea and using wood from local forests to build houses and boats. They have developed a lifestyle truly in tune with nature.

After lunch, we pretended to be scientists for a few hours. As a welcoming activity, the Portuguese team created the flags of the 5 countries, using chemical reactions that produced the different colours of the flags. After that, all the students learned how to reuse cooking oil to make soap.

ECO GAME (created originally for the Erasmus project)

After leaving the lab the students went to the library and each of them was offered a set of cards, similar to the Uno game, created by the Portuguese students. The theme of the game was climate change and green chemistry. Each card had some small notes on these subjects in English, French, Greek,Portuguese , Slovenian and Italian. It was a great way of getting to know one another and the students and teachers had lots of fun while trying to read the notes in the other languages.

Surfing lesson- getting in sync with the ocean

We all met at the beach in Costa da Caparica and it was a wonderful sunny morning, but the temperature was a bit low. Even so, the students were very enthusiastic about having their first surfing experience and most of them bravely got into their wetsuits and waited for their turn to catch a wave. All in all, it was a fantastic experience!

Exploring the fossil cliff reserve and dune preservation

This activity included a guided tour of the cliff and dunes, to get a general view of the fauna and flora of the surrounding area. After walking through the natural landscape, students listened to poems related to the theme and played simple games. By the end of the visit, we all had the opportunity to take amazing photos of the sunset from the top of the cliff overlooking the beaches and Costa de Caparica.

Workshops at Casa da Cerca

Casa da Cerca is a contemporary art centre that promotes workshops using ancestral techniques but also hosting a vast cultural project committed to the deepening of research and the dissemination of contemporary art. During the first proposed activity, while using cotton tote bags, the students created their own unique reusable bags with floral paterns as a way of motivating them for avoiding plastic bags which are not reusable.
In the following activity the students did a portrait of another student or teacher, using a camera obscura.

Within the privileged context of the historic and industrial heritage of the Tejo Power Station - the “factory” that illuminated the Lisbon region at the beginning of the 20th century and which today stands as a museum of science and technology – the Science Education Service develops programs adapted to various audiences, which aim to drive curiosity and the desire to understand the world around us.

Visits to this historic heritage come to life when they are accompanied by experimental demonstrations that invite the visitor to follow the journey that, from discovery to discovery, enabled the industrial production of electric power.

Workshops suited to family or school groups reveal some of the mysteries that technologies introduced into our lives. A variety of activities designed for school groups, from primary school to university, allows students to build devices, applying the phenomena of physics and stimulating the desire to research them.

The Education Service develops specific programs for the school public that address the curricular contents of various teaching levels, from preschool to university. This relationship with the school community also includes the joint development and implementation of scientific projects that are in line with the curricular plan and the museum’s subject matter.

Almada, on the south bank of the River Tagus, has undoubtedly the best view of the city of Lisbon. The most outstanding views are from the castle, the panoramic funicular of the Boca do Vento (Mouth of the Wind), and above all the statue of Christ the King, built in 1959.

In past centuries, Almada was a popular summer resort for the Court, which ordered the construction of stately homes and buildings that are still preserved in the city.

Life in Almada does not revolve only around the capital, where most of its inhabitants work; it is a city with its own life, the setting for well-attended events like the Theatre Festival.

The Costa da Caparica, much sought after during the summer season by the population of Greater Lisbon, who are lured by the long sandy beaches, is also part of the council of Almada.

This video is just a summary of the activities that took place during the last meeting of our Erasmus+ project on "Climate Change". Our project, whose activities began when the normality of our lives was severely challenged by the Coronavirus pandemic, allowed students and teachers to have more scientific information on this topic of such great importance in our age .
Various activities, almost all of them outdoor, focused on the culture of reuse, recycling and the need to reduce waste production. There were many opportunities to teach respect for sites of natural interest. there were also many opportunities to do some targeted research, but also to socialise and discover that our differences are richness.
There were also moments of education on healthy food, good for the environment and for our health, in particular to prevent diseases such as cancer. Special thanks go to the AIRC Foundation, Catania section, and to the Associazione Provinciale Cuochi e Pasticceri Etnei.
Erasmus+ experiences are also full of moments of 'healthy' fun and friendship and by watching this video, you will discover that! Once again, thank you to the European programme, which is for all of us a great resource for the training of young and old and makes us feel part of a better Europe!

After a Sunday of arrivals at different times of the day, the first day of activities took place as planned. The group leaders soon realised that a good feeling had already been created between the host and homestay students. There were official welcome greetings, registration of all participants, distribution of gadgets and some students from the tourist reception section led a guided tour of the school. After a social time in the cafeteria, the Tangerine Room was used to share presentations on reducing food waste, topic explored by the students from the different participating countries before the last meeting.

The buffet lunch was served in the large Orange Room and was based on a menu of preparations inspired by the Mediterranean diet. Local and seasonal products were emphasised and vegetables took a place of honour. Good, fair and clean food in short.

The 'creative gardening' activity at the Riposto site was unfortunately cancelled due to the sudden rain, so the students took a walk in the historic centre of Giarre and the teachers also enjoyed a short walk with a stop in a bar in the city centre for a drink. The day ended for them in a pizzeria together with the Erasmus+ Coordinator and some colleagues from the host school.

The most important activity of the day was the Erasmus+ Civic Engagement seminar for the dissemination of good practices on the subject of "Healthy and Sustainable Food Friend of the Environment and Health" with contributions from AIRC Catania on the prevention diet in the fight against cancer and the Associazione Cuochi Etnei on healthier cooking techniques, with some practical demonstrations. In the prevention of cancer, the right diet is a valuable ally, and the right choices in terms of food also help to reduce man's impact on the environment from a dietary point of view also contribute to reducing man's impact on the environment. This report was emphasised by the speakers from the AIRC foundation, Catania section, the distinguished Dr. Francesco Trimarchi, Professor Emeritus of Endocrinology and Dr Le Moli, Endocrinologist, to which were added the and Dr. Le Moli, Endocrinologist, plus valuable advice on cooking methods and correct food combinations from the President of the Provincial Association of Etnean Chefs and Pastry Chefs, Chef Angelo Scuderi, who spoke together with Giuseppe Lavalle and Giorgio Pillera.

In the afternoon, as scheduled, there was a guided tour of Taormina, prepared by a group of tourist reception students, led by Teacher Rosetta Silvestro. Despite the rainy afternoon, the 'Pearl of the Ionian Sea' fascinated all the participants, who admired its beauty. The visit to the Ancient Theatre, which in terms of size is the second largest theatre in Sicily, after that of Syracuse, but is also the best known in the world and the most admired, was not to be missed. The visit also included some tasty treats, including the ever-popular 'cannolo siciliano'!

Visit to the Intercultural and Ecosustainable Reuse Fair Centre/ Fieri-Fabbrica Interculturale ed Ecosostenibile del Riuso (with recycling activities). An entirely sustainable bottom-up project that gives new life to objects destined for the dump, creating integration, employment and respect for the environment. An old farmhouse in the municipality of Catania has been renovated and turned into a laboratory for recovery and transformation. It is FIERi - Ecosustainable Intercultural Reuse Factory. To be read fièri, proud of a project that started from the bottom. But also fìeri, a Latin verb denoting change. That change in lifestyle, in the spirit of the circular economy, that is needed by all of us to reduce our impact on the environment.

In the afternoon, in the pouring rain, unusual for the season, we took a guided tour of the historical centre of Catania, stopping at the city's most important monuments. As in Taormina, the visit was led by a group of students from the tourist reception section, with the support of Teacher Marianna Strazzuso. The students and teachers from the different delegations could admire the splendid baroque of this great city, which has been hit several times by catastrophic events. In 1669 Mount Etna erupted and threatened to bury everything. The city escaped thanks to its walls. However, in 1693 a massive earthquake did indeed destroy Catania. The city was completely rebuilt in the Baroque style that it has retained to this day.

The first part of this fourth day was dedicated to a visit that allowed all participants, including local ones, to discover a place of great natural interest: the Complesso Immacolatelle and Micio Conti Integral Nature Reserve. Located between Mount Etna and the Gulf of Catania, the Riserva Naturale Integrale Complesso Immacolatelle and Micio Conti Nature Reserve, established in 1998, protects a 25-hectare complex of lava caves in a typical agrarian landscape characterised by the presence of ancient shepherds' shelters ('casudde') and dry-stone walls. In 2008, it was included among the Sites of Community Interest (SCI). By decree of 21 December 2015 of the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea, the 'Immacolatelle Complex, Micio Conti and neighbouring woods' was designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) of the Sicilian Region. The reserve consists of a system of nine volcanic cavities within a lava field with Hawaiian morphology. Within the cavities are interesting morphologies. Divided into two groups, suitably equipped and guided, we visited one of them. The experience was very interesting, not only inside the cave, but also outside, given the richness of the biodiversity and the interest that the two guides were able to arouse among the participants, who also asked many interesting questions.

In the second part of the day, we moved to Bagol'Area, an organic farm and sustainable tourism enterprise. Here, Cinzia and Diego, the owners, welcomed us with their great sense of hospitality and told us how their project came about. In recent years, their choices have been oriented towards finding harmony with their surroundings. By creating an economic ecosystem, but not only that, that would make their project sustainable, they have sought a possible alternative to urban aggregation. Accepting that nothing and nobody can be self-sufficient either economically or socially was the fundamental step towards sustainability and understanding the concept of synergy and cooperation. Through agriculture as a tool for land conservation, the farm becomes a landscape intervention through which to recover an abandoned area on the north-eastern slope of Etna. Bush-trained vineyards cultivated organically on lava terraces keep the history of the area alive; in the cellar, vinification using natural methods produces a sincere wine that, nourishing body and soul, accompanies special moments. The houses, built with eco-sustainable materials, which welcome tourists seeking the tranquillity of nature, are surrounded by the scents and colours of the Mediterranean maquis as a backdrop. A perfect setting for relaxation, in the shade of the citrus grove or discovering the first fruits of the season among the trees in the orchard or strolling through the rows of vines in the vineyard. In this particular context, we also had a country style lunch prepared with local products and traditional recipes.

During the first part of the day, there was the visit to the "Timpa di Acireale" Oriented Nature Reserve, with a lecture on "Protecting Biodiversity" and Environmental Education activities by Legambiente and CEA of ACI. The Timpa di Acireale is a protected natural area, a marvellous and imposing rocky escarpment overlooking the sea of Sicily. It is a unique place, offering glimpses of rare beauty and breathtaking views. Easily accessible, the oriented nature reserve, made up of numerous lava stratifications, preserves fauna and flora typical of the area. It also houses, along the Chiazzette path, the Fortezza del Tocco, a bastion built for defensive purposes in the first half of the 17th century. The CEA delle Aci environmental education centre is an active space born from the initiative of Legambiente Acireale. Located in the seaside village of Santa Maria la Scala, the CEA delle Aci promotes and disseminates virtuous and sustainable practices through its training initiatives, its educational-didactic courses and its projects for schools. In addition, the environmental education centre hosts cultural events and manifestations, and its premises host outreach camps and educational stays, opportunities for everyone to actively socialise and take responsibility for the environment.

In the afternoon, as scheduled, there was a guided tour of Acireale, small fishing village near Catania, prepared by a group of tourist reception students. We saw the historic centre,recognisable by the classic urban layout of Sicily’s late-medieval cities and the Baroque influences. However, in the 17th century the city was partly destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt in the Baroque style, which our hosts could admire by strolling through the historical centre where the nobles had their palaces built. In addition to Piazza Duomo and Acireale Cathedral, Villa Belvedere, Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Basilica of St Sebastian, Church of St. Anthony of Padua, we also visited the Museum of Uniforms, in the Sala Costarelli of the Palazzo del Comune in Piazza del Duomo and The Acireale Carnival Museum, with miniature works and traditions of Sicily's most beautiful carnival.

Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions, the free Etna Excursion, via Castagno dei Cento Cavalli, Monti Sartorius has been cancelled and replaced by the guided visit to Radicepura Garden Festival an event to rediscover the Mediterranean gardens and promoting green culture, using art, design, music and literature, so perfectly according to the aim of our project. However, during the first part of the morning, we visited the monumental Chestnut Tree.

Despite the heavy rain it was possible to admire the majestic beauty of what is a masterpiece of Nature, now a Unesco World Heritage Site. Legambiente, attentive to the preservation of historic trees, has made it the symbol of its 'Precious X Nature' campaign. Before heading to Radicepura, we were also able to visit the small but interesting Museum of Vine, Wine and Ancient Crafts, in the small village of Sant'Alfio. Housed in an elegant building in the historic centre, it was born in the late 1990s. Despite the disappointment of the missed excursion to Mount Etna, the visit to Radicepura was of great interest, not least because the biennial Garden Festival, now in its fourth year, is taking place. For six months, the Mediterranean Landscape Biennial will be the privileged stage for those interested in the subject of gardens as an observatory on nature and the ecological and cultural challenges of our time. The theme of this edition, proposed by Artistic Director Antonio Perazzi, is THE GARDEN OF PLANTS: the projects on display enhance the botanical element in order to demonstrate the benefits of a quality, modern, functional, poetic and harmonious garden. The aim is to promote a different style of garden capable of affirming a conscious belonging to the natural world, gardens in which a sincere relationship with plants and the environment is implemented on a daily basis. Stimulating reflection on this theme with his own contribution was Paolo Pejrone, who created the garden Vento e Acqua, tentativi di resilienza (Wind and Water, attempts at resilience) for the festival.

After the guided tour of the entire Horticultural Park, it was the turn of a circle time during which participants expressed their impressions and emotions about their Erasmus+ experience, considering the various aspects. It was a great moment.
