Q1. Which of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines do you think students violate most often?

I believe the guideline that is violated the most is guideline number 8. The reason I say this is because I believe I have been told about plagiarism guidelines every year I have been in school. It is something that is easy to break due to students copying homework, code, or images without giving any credit. This is prevalent in writing essays and using quotes without talking about the resource or giving credit. When AI came into the picture, it became easier to cheat and plagiarize as now we have something that can do it for us.

Q2. Why do you think these violations occur?

I believe these violations occur because of a combination of stress, the convenience of digital tools, and a complete lack of awareness. Students can be met with many challenges inside and outside of school. The academic pressure and tight deadlines can tempt them to make shortcuts rather tan finish the work by themselves. In most cases, they do not understand that copying online content without permission or citation is unethical. With how fast technology advances, it can outpace ethical education which can lead to bad habits.

Q3. What do you think could be done to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior?

I believe one of the few ways we can reduce or eliminate unethical behavior is for schools and communities to teach digital responsibility. This includes warning students about plagiarism and misuse and helping them understand why ethical behavior matters in the digital world. With the increased use of AI in today's world, providing education on AI use and its consequences should be discussed. Giving the students tools like plagiarism checkers, open source alternatives, and help on proper citation can motivate students to do the right thing.
