I believe that the authors purpose for writing this book was to inform readers about the significance of the 1984 NBA Draft. It is probably the most well-known draft for the NBA of all time. The author wanted to share with the reader the importance of this. For example, in the story it said that almost all of the first round picks that year went on to be millionaires. At least 5 of the draftees were hall of fame caliber in their time. This author was clearly telling you that as a basketball fan, you need to know and inform yourself about this.

This book is to inform because it gives you lots of facts about police radio talk. In Cop Talk, there really isn't a central idea other than to inform, but throughout the book, the author mentioned a lot about how to listen in to police radios. The central idea in that part of the book is be prepared before you get into trouble because the author bought a frequency reader and checked the cities regulations to see if listening to the police is legal.

The central idea of this book is to take away these life lessons and learn from them so that what happened to these people won't happen to you. For example, one of the character in the book was a prankster. One of his prank's went sourly wrong and then he wound up dead. The authors purpose for writing this book was a bit to entertain and persuade
