There is complete separation between the relationship that terry has with her family and how they each individual feel about one another. Everyone is selfish in beginning of the film. The siblings refuse to share the little they have which includes TV time, snacks, and even responsibilities. The father is selfish because he doesn’t want work anymore while the mother isn’t selfish all. Once tory leaves her family and once her mom dies everyone becomes united and more aware of everyone else around them.

Throughout the movie, the parents have tried to be positive role models for their kids. Carolyn is a schoolteacher barely making enough money to pay the bills to the house and buy food. As for the Woody (the dad), he is a struggling musician and believes one day he will bring money to the house. Both parents try to teach their kids to be independent by sending them for food, making them do chores around the house, and make sure they are taking care of one another.

This can be seen once tory leaves to the south, everything is distorted as though it isn’t real or implying tory doesn’t belong there. The aunt is trying to make a persona that isn’t hers or aesthetic to fit an image(a white image) that she feels must be met in order for her to be accepted, which can be seen in her trying to fix Tory’s hair and her constant fixation of her adopted daughter’s appearance but it doesn’t matter because it isn’t who she is which is why everything is distorted when the audience is in the environment with Tory but then when she comes back we are reminded of black beauty with the commercial that shows her natural hair and this acceptance of who she is.

When Carolyn dies from cancer, Troy feels this pressure because she has no choice but to look after all her siblings as the only girl in the family. Back then it was believed that as the women in the house they are in charge of doing the chores around the house and be able to take responsibility in making food for the family. This causes her to become more independent and can lead to stress.

In the beginning of the movie Troy and her siblings are selfish of the little things they all have when it came to who gets to the TV and what show they want to watch to the responsibilities they all shared while doing chores. In fact her father even called her mother, Carolyn, selfish when he failed to see all the hard work she puts in to support her family while he chases his dreams as a Musican. Once Troy is away from her family while in the south with her aunt Song, she realized how much she truly misses her family and how she can't stand her aunt Song. Upon her return back to Brooklyn, Her mother was diagnosed with cancer which united her family closer than ever during those hard times.
