My article is basically about when the eurpeans first made contact with Guam. The first European to make it to Guam was Ferdinand Magellan. He first named the island of Guam as ''island with lateen sails'' because of how the Chamorros were good in using proas, but then later changed it to Island of the thieves after a misunderstanding with the locals. The first fight with them started because a European slapped a Chamorro and the Chamorro hit him back and then the European then hit him with a machete causing them to start a mini war against them, after the Europeans saw they were outnumbered so they asked for forgiveness and peace. So thats basically what my article is about.l

There is some historical question as to which island he actually visited, but Magellan named the islands the Ladrones (Spanish: “Thieves”) because while he was there some of the islanders took a small skiff that he had trailing behind one of his ships. In 1565 Miguel López de Legazpi landed at Umatac, Guam, and proclaimed over the Ladrones; some priests went ashore to perform mass.

Magellan and his men set of from their point of origin in order to acquire new land s for the king and convert more people to Christianity. After hard days at sea, lack of food and resources set them desperate for land. Soon after passsing the Island of Disappointments, they landed on Guam. The natives climbed aboard and took what they took, which caused Magellan's men to attack and burn down several of the housings on the island. Peace was made thereafter and trade was conducted for provisions from the islanders and material from the Europeans. After the trade, Magellan set off in search of more lands.

It was discovered by Ferdinand Magellan’s crew in 1521, when he was circumnavigating the world. He then left the Marianas after that, but it was frequently visited. Europeans then came to the Marianas and starting forcing the islanders in Catholicism. The islands went through many wars afterwards. It’s been owned by Germany, Japan, and ultimately turned into an independant system, though still a part of the United States. It turned into Guam, and the CNMI. This is basically was was summed up in the article I read.

Then more people wanted to have the islands and bought some of them. Then in world War 1 Japan took the islands from one of the owners and the Northern Marianas. Japan at the time owned the Marianas but then the U.S. took it and then the Marianas decided to become a U.S. Commonwealth and became self-governed.
