Mulan embodies the idea of self-reliance through her individualism and ambition against the rules of women in her society. "Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members". This quote from 'Self-Reliance' by Ralph Waldo Emerson emphasizes the idea that one should be themselves and not indifferent to the norms of society.

The song 'Born in the U.S.A' carries a lot of meaning behind it. The lyrics, "Nowhere to run ain't nowhere to go" conveys that he is tormented by his thoughts and is trying to escape them. Self-Reliance avoids conformity by escaping to be different. The two connect with each other on a parallel level, independence not to be dependent.

Friedrich Nietzsche was a philosopher greatly misunderstood in his time. Nietzsche claimed that humans must make up their own identity through self-realization and do that without relying on any outside sources. “Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.”

Chris McCandless embodies self reliance by yearning isolation and independence. He lived on his own for a sense of individualism. McCandles reflected reliance as key to survival which is ironic. He held these principles with him till the moment he passed.
