After seeing the people in the cleaners, the narrator thinks to himself "Maybe I didn't see anything. And if I hadn't seen anything?" (p. 110). He is in denial about what happened and wants to forget because he is worried about sinning and going to Hell. Multiple stories in this book talk about burning, literally or figuratively, and of going to hell. I don't see this being a connection to "First Communion". The story that comes afterwards, however, does connect to "First Communion". "I had fallen against a small basin filled with hot coals which we used as a heater in the little room where we slept. I had burned my calf. I could well imagine how it might be to burn in hell forever." His calf is a metaphor of what he originally believes to be "sins of the flesh", and shows his lack of understanding about the subject. The main character, like so many other children, was not educated about sex beyond being told that it was bad and a sin. He then is exposed to sex and doesn't know how to handle it.
