Why Play-Based Learning?

Scientists have discovered a lot about how children learn! Young brains learn differently than adult brains. Adults learn by putting a "spotlight" on a specific subject area - children learn in an integrated manner, much like a lantern. They make connections across numerous subject areas all at once.

In addition, scientists have found that to maximize children's learning; children must be engaging and meaningful in their lives. Therefore, a play-based learning approach is best for young brains.

In TK, your child will participate in many types of play throughout the day. The three types of the game are part of the play continuum.

* Adult-planned and directed play is when the teacher leads games or scenarios with specific rules and objectives. The games target multiple subject areas in an integrated manner.

* Adult-child collaborative play is when children select where and how to play within an environment. The teacher actively participates in the child's play by asking questions, making observations, and guiding the child to support development.

* Child self-determined play is when the child has complete control of how, when, and where to play. The teacher is available to support but does not "plan" or "direct" play.

Giving children many choices requires them to participate respectfully and thoughtfully with their teacher and peers. We will spend most of our time in August and September learning self-care, routines and focusing on social-emotional learning. The only way to learn social-emotional skills is through a lot of practice!
