Initial conversation with student

Simple questions that are not to obvious, in front of other students or embarrassing. Gently asking when a student comes to have their work checked if they understand the assignment, asking them to reiterate the directions, read, spell something or give other small examples to see where the difficulty may stem from.

Conference with parents and counselor

Differential learning practices

QSI where I work actually offers differential learning year round, with or without disability so students will have access to choose different reports and projects. The student will be given a slightly altered timeline and expectations while further assessment is done.

Discussion with school counselor

Teacher will meet with the counselor to discuss needs of the student and seek advice. QSI is fairly small so the counselor knows all the students by name in a short time. Our school does not have an exact IEP plan but we do have a designated paraprofessional to assist students and the counselor who come up with detailed plans of how to progress the student with accommodations and reasonable goals.

ELL learners assessment

If the student is struggling due to comprehension, and is a known ELL, a short assessment of basic concepts and words will be performed. Student may be asked gently if he or she is struggling to understand concepts due to the language

Further differential learning practices

Individual plan will be developed to decide if the student needs more time, altered assignments, less complex tests and examinations, different reading books, math assignments, etc.

For ELLs

Regular meetings with a counselor

At QSI our counselor handles a lot of the learning disabilities and we have an on site para who works with all the students in this category. They have weekly meetings and daily check in, as well as a report card for the week of how they did.

Weekly check ins

Student will meet in after school programs with the teacher one on one to discuss needs and develop skillsets. After school tutoring program is offered by QSI and meets on Tuesdays in small groups and individually.

Bi-monthly parent teacher conferences

Conferences are held every other months with the parent, teacher and student to check in on how the student is doing, goals and what progress is being made.

Quarterly showcase

At QSI Montenegro we have quarterly student lead conferences where students can show off what they have been doing, what projects they have made and they present a portfolio of their work. At this time the student would be displaying skillset and abilities along with all the other students, and there would be a chance for parent, teacher, counselor and school director to have some insight.

End of the year assessment

Students would take part in MAPP testing and other end of year assessments and would have a review before moving on to the next grade level.
