Baptism

As you might recall, baptism began with John the Baptists, the prophet who knew of Christ's coming. For many Christians, baptism occurs a few days after birth, although adults are also baptized. The ceremony is an induction into Christian society and Christian faith.

Although the practice differs with each Christian group, the common factor is the use of water, a symbol of purification and cleansing. For example, Eastern Orthodox Christians immerse the baby in water, while Roman Catholics pour water over the infant's head. Some Protestant groups, such as Quakers and Christian Scientists, do not practice baptism.

According to Roman Catholic law, godparents are required to attend the baptism ceremony. Godparents agree that they will be responsible for the child religious upbringing if the parents are unable to do so.

The infant is often given a name during baptism. This is called christening. Many parents choose to name their child after a saint in the hope that the newborn might adopt the saint's characteristics.

In Christian marriage, the man and woman devote themselves to one another for life. This is the sacrament of the Holy Matrimony, in in which the couple agree to mirror the union of Christ and his church. The marriage should be an active symbol of self-sacrifice and demotion.

Most weddings take place in a church, but not all weddings do this. In a church wedding, and similar weddings, the bride is escorted down the aisle by her parents and entrusted to the groom. At the altar, the bride and groom exchange vows and rings. After they kiss, the couple is followed down the aisle by the wedding party.

Depending on the couple's denomination, they may include poetry or music in their service. Since many Roman Catholic weddings take place during Mass, those present receive Holy Communion. Most wedding are followed by a celebration or party.

Death

Christ's resurrection is proof that death can be a passage to life eternal. For Catholics, at the moment of death, people are judged on how they led their lives. Either Heaven, Hell, or Purgatory awaits them. Those who have repented their sins and lived justly go to heaven. The unrepentant and sinful will suffer in hell, while those somewhere in between wait in purgatory where their souls are cleansed and made ready for union with God. Although not all Christians share the belief in heaven, hell, and purgatory, the belief in eternal life is common to all.

A sacrament once called Extreme Unction, and now called the Last Rites or the Anointing of the Sick, is often given to gravely ill people. The sick individual asks forgiveness for his or her sins, or if unable to do so, the minister does in his or her stead.

Christian funeral customs vary throughout the world. In some countries, a wake, or period of mourning and prayer, precedes the funeral. The funeral ceremony usually includes prayers and speeches. Sometimes, the body is displayed before burial or cremation. Roman Catholics pray the rosary over the body on the evening before the funeral. After the funeral, mourners of all Christian faiths often gather at the family's home.
