The CBS in Belize is a community-driven conservation initiative aimed at protecting the endangered Yucatán black howler monkey. CBS operates as a Community Conserved Area, with landowners voluntarily preserving monkey habitats across seven Belize River Valley communities. A key success has been the howler monkey population increasing by lack of hunting and taking them as exotic pets. They also focus on genetic diversity rather than just increased population. However, one challenge is sustaining long-term community participation and balancing economic development with conservation goals. I don't think this would be able to work for every species.

The current aim of the Community Baboon Sanctuary (CBS) is to maintain a genetically diverse population. The stakeholders in the conservation are approximately 170 land owners from surrounding villages hence the "community" conservation. The conservation has been successful in increasing the howler monkey populations by more than 450%. The approach of CBS can be very affective in less urbanized areas where there are still large amounts of undeveloped forest. However this approach may be less effective in areas where there is not enough of the animal's natural habitat left to sustain a population

The CBS is a community-based conservation initiative in Belize, established in 1985 to protect black howler monkeys. Unlike most traditional sanctuaries, it relies on voluntary participation from land owners from seven Belize River Valley Villages to incorporate conservation and culture into one livelihood. In this, CBS has successfully increased howler monkey populations by 450–500% and influenced conservation policies in Belize. Key stakeholders include villages, local landowners, NGOs and the Belizean government. While it is effective for species with strong local support, this model may not work universally, especially where economic incentives conflict with conservation.

The organization aims to protect the black howler monkeys in Belize and provide a sanctuary for their populations. They are supported mainly by the Belize River Valley communities that have lived there for generations and want to preserve the howler monkeys, as they are important to their culture. Their largest success has been the increase in the population, seeing a 450 to 500% increase since CBS' creation. While this method certainly worked for the howler monkey, it does not necessarily mean that it works for every species, as what led to the success of the howler monkey (the close ties it has to the Belize River Valley communities) does not exist for every species, so it would be harder to garner sympathy and support depending on the species you want to protect.

The goal of the organization is to maintain a healthy howler monkey population, educate people about the animals, and to foster a cultural appreciation for them. Over 170 landowners are involved over 7 villages. They participate in the conservation because the monkeys are culturally significant and the sanctuary helps provide resources and support for the community. The population of the monkeys has increased dramatically, but this approach might not work for every species, since not every group has the same cultural attitude towards the natural world, meaning to community support might not be present in the same way it is here.
